Line of the Day: 06/30/2010

June 2010
OF/DH Vladimir Guerrero, TEX was 4-for-4 with a double and two home runs (one was a grand slam) with five RBI and two runs. Vlad is putting up MVP-type numbers (.339/51/18/68/4) and was clearly a steal at an ADP of 151.9. At his current pace, he projects at (.339/110/39/147/9). WOW! Those numbers are right on pace with his 2004 MVP season.

My Poor Booger's Butt

June 2010
It has been a rough two days for my 7 ½ year old Chihuahua, Booger. He tore his anal gland for the third time in two years. The vet told us when it first happened that he will be susceptible to it happening again, and it did. Apparently this is common with little dogs when they try and shit a turd bigger than themselves.

Yesterday, I got a text from my husband saying that he was sitting with his back leg up like he was in pain and walking cockeyed. He soaked him in the tub for ten minutes in warm salt water, which is what the vet told us to do when he displayed this behavior. When I got home, I soaked him again. He was running around whining and trying to get comfortable. He finally fell asleep in his bed around 10:00 pm but was pretty restless all night.

This morning it was apparent to me that he was still in pain. I called the vet and got an 11:00 am appointment. The drive was only 10 minutes to the vet’s clinic, but during the short drive he ran from the front seat to the back seat, the entire time, like a crazy dog. When I parked the car he started shaking and whined like a little baby. This was a different clinic yet he knew where his was and that no good would come from going inside this building. I pick up his little butt, and brought him inside.

We were ushered into a room where Booger was put on a table to be examined. At this point, he is shaking, hacking, and shedding like crazy. By the time they were done, the tan table top was covered with black hair. It looked like a furry animal lying flat on the table. He needed to get his butt cleaned out and I was to leave him there while they did the procedure. They had to knock the poor thing out because apparently it is painful to have someone clean your ass. (Really?)

After an hour, I went to pick him up. The lady opened the door, and out staggered my very groggy little guy. He slowly looked up at me and his eyes were glazed over. (Zombie dog!) I picked him up to carry him out to the car and he just slumped over. This time on the ride home, he just laid there and enjoyed the buzz. I was given two different types of meds to give him. Oh joy, he is the worst dog to give pills to. I have tried to sneak the pills in food but he caught on to that trick. Our cocker, Lucy, will still fall for it but she still a youngin’. Taking my life in my hands, I pry open his mouth, and then shoot that baby to the back of his throat. He snarls the entire time, but I win out in the end. At least he is feeling better and his ass doesn’t hurt anymore.

Lamb good again...Rocks take the series!

June 2010
John Lamb gave his Wilmington Blue Rocks a chance to win with his 8th start of the year in the Carolina League. It is can always be somewhat of a challenge to pitch on the road, but Lamb continues to be steady with the numbers home or away during his first full season in professional baseball.

Lamb had a high pitch count during his work tonight due to patient Frederick Keys hitters and again the high strike-out count. The line on Lamb was 4 innings, 6 hits, 1 run, 0 earned runs, 1 walk and 7 strike-outs in 86 pitches. When Lamb handed the ball to the bull-pen the Blue Rocks had a 3-1 lead, but unfortunately could not qualify for the win.

Hodgson and Mozingo both teamed up to hold off a late inning surge in the bottom of the 9th to take the series from the Keys in Frederick, MD. Ivor Hodgson had a very solid performance into the 9th and qualified for the win, while Harold Mozingo came in and got the save.

Adrian Ortiz hit his first Blue Rocks home run during his 4-for-5 night at the plate. Another note, worth mentioning was the Christian Colon debut that was very quiet at the plate. He finished the night 0-for-5 with two strikeouts. It is very safe to say that this will not be the only night he has nothing to show at the plate, during his career, but the kid can simply play the game and he is a wonderful addition to the organization.

The Blue Rocks return home to fend off the Lynchburg Hillcats, Advanced Class A team of the Cincinnati Reds organization, for a short 3 game stand. The current rotation has Lamb pitching the next two starts on the road and he will not be throwing at home until July 15. At least he won’t be a teenager the next time he pitches in front of the Wilmington crowd.

Lamb grabs his 2nd "POW" honor...

June 2010
Very proud of my son, John Lamb, and his second "Pitcher of Week" Award during his young professional baseball career. The weekly honors were announced much earlier today on Minor League Baseball and throughout all of the leagues.

Lamb will get the ball tomorrow night in Frederick, MD against the Keys, Advanced Class A team of the Baltimore Orioles organization. Tuesday's start will be his 16th of the season and just another day at the ballpark for him, I am sure. However, it will match his number of starts in the Midwest League earlier this year prior to his call-up to the Wilmington Blue Rocks.

Congratulations again to all of those minor league players that received the honors today for their recent performances.

Line of the Day: 06/28/2010

June 2010
OF Michael Bourn, HOU was 4-for-6 with a home run (his 1st), two RBI, two runs and stole his 23rd base (was caught stealing once, too). His batting average is now up to .265. His career average is only .262, so anything north of that is a plus. Bourn is on pace for 49 steals and 97 runs. That's about all you get when you draft him (and Juan Pierre).

The Infamous Ike Clanton

June 2010
Joseph Isaac (Ike) Clanton was a pivotal player of one of the most famous events in Wild West history, the gunfight at the O.K. Corral. He along with his younger brother Billy has chiseled their place in American Old West history. He was born on June 1, 1847 and one of seven children. His father, Newman Haynes Clanton was known as Old Man Clanton by many and was a day laborer, a gold miner, a farmer, and by the late 1870’s, a cattleman in the Arizona Territory. His mother was Maria Sexton (Kelso) Clanton and died in 1866 in a mining center.

After his mother’s death, Ike stayed with his father and brothers, Phineas (Fin) and Billy after they moved to Tombstone. His father ran a small lunch counter and then a ranch which Ike worked on. The Clanton boys earned a bad reputation and were accused of cattle rustling, banditry and murder. Ike didn’t gain fan as a notorious bad boy until his many conflicts with the Earps and Doc Holliday. He was an ill tempered, heavy drinking loudmouth that was constantly bad talking about the Earps.

The problems between the Earps began right after Wyatt arrived in Tombstone in November 1879. Wyatt’s horse was stolen and a year later he found out that it was in Charleston on the Clanton’s ranch. After getting ownership papers proving the horse to be his, Wyatt and Doc headed out to their ranch. They were met by 18 year old smart mouth Billy, who was somewhat threatening to steal more of his horses. He finally retrieved his horse, which seemed to anger Wyatt and Ike as well. After that, the Clantons and the Earps both exchanged accusations that each was committing the many crimes happening in and around Tombstone.

On October 25, 1881, Doc Holliday confronted Ike about a stagecoach robbery which angered him. Ike got very drunk and belligerent and shortly afterwards, an argument with Holliday ensued. Morgan and Virgil threatened to arrest the both of them if they didn’t stop, so they did. They left the scene, Doc to get some sleep, but Ike stayed up through the wee hours playing cards with Tom McLaury and Virgil Earp. When the game was over and the other boys went to bed, but Ike kept drinking and was seen carrying his rifle in the middle of town, yelling like a fool, threatening Doc and the Earps. Virgil and Morgan were able to get the jump on Ike, knocking him out and throwing his filthy butt in jail. He was fined for carrying a weapon in the city, paid the fine and had a heated exchange of words with the Earps as he left.

Ike, along with Tom McLaury, later met up with his younger brother Billy and Tom’s brother, Frank, in back of the O.K. Corral. They were angered by what the Earps did to Ike and made strong threats against them. The Earps got wind of the threats, headed down the street towards the O.K. Corral, and was joined by Doc Holliday. They went there to retrieve the McLaury’s and Clanton’s weapons, and a few minutes later history was made. At 3:00 pm on October 26, 1881 in a vacant lot behind the O.K. Corral, a gunbattle ensused and at the end, three men were dead. There were reports by witnesses that Ike was unarmed and was able to skinned out unharmed along with Billy Claiborne, but his little brother Billy and the McLaurys were not as lucky. Afterwards there was a hearing against the Earps who were accused as being murderers.

In his usual fashion, Ike tried to spin the story making it look like the Earps and Holliday went to the corral with the intent to purposely murder all of them. He painted them as cool blooded killers and lied about other incidences from the past further making them look like liars and thieves. However, the Earps had a better defense and with all that Ike tried to do to get them convicted of murder, the charges were eventually dropped.

In December of 1881, Ike along with his brother Fin and Pony Diehl, attacked Virgil Earp in an attempt to assassinate him. Virgil didn’t die but was disabled for life. Ike was arrested but his friends provided him with an alibi, so the judge had no choice but to dismiss the case. There attempt to kill Virgil failed but in March of 1882, Ike along with Frank Stilwell and others, attacked Wyatt and Morgan leaving Morgan mortally wounded. He eventually died from his wounds causing Wyatt to remove Virgil from Tombstone for his safety. After Wyatt killed Stilwell, the Earp Vendetta Ride went after Ike and the other cowboys involved in the slaying of Morgan and the second attempt on Virgil’s life. Ike escaped again but his hell raising days were not over yet.

After getting caught cattle-rustling with his brother Fin, they were trapped at the Jim Wilson’s Ranch on Eagle Creek, near Springerville, Arizona by Detective Jonas V. Brighton on June 1, 1887. Fin surrendered quietly but not Ike. He was shot twice with the fatal blow going through his heart. He fell off his horse and hit the ground dead. There were many reports of where his body was buried, but it wasn’t until 1996 that a remaining relative, Terry Clanton, along with grave expert, James A. Browning, found where it was officially located. Under a large tree near the creek in Greenlee County, Arizona, is a shallow grave they believe to be his. Even though Terry has tried to get Ike’s remains buried in the Boothill Graveyard near Tombstone, the town’s officials feel that his remains shouldn’t be bothered.

Line of the Day: 06/27/2010

June 2010
SP Jon Lester, BOS allowed one run in a complete game win against the Giants, striking out nine while giving up just five hits and a walk. Lester bested Tim Lincecum on the road and increased his record to 9-3 with a 2.86 ERA and a 1.11 WHIP this season. Lester continues to prove he was worth being drafted (40.9 ADP) as a fantasy baseball "ace".

Next Carolina League start on Tuesday for Lamb...

June 2010
John Lamb is back on the road again, Tuesday, in Frederick against the Keys for his 16th start of the season. Radio broadcast will be available on the Wilmington Blue Rocks site at http://www.bluerocks.com.

Meanwhile, I am staying busy with scouting and coaching in the Southern California area. Recently, following permission by the Marlins, I have returned to the dugout with a Connie Mack baseball team called the OC Giants. We have a wide variety of talent on the team and continue to struggle with the "one bad inning" bug almost every game.

Our family has also decided to welcome a 16 year-old from Florida into our home and the opportunity to play in California during the summer, on the OC Giants team. We felt a sense of responsibility to the game when asked to help and we are grateful for the chance to give back, as so many have done for our son over the years.

June 2010
RC Organizational Report: June 24: "Six affiliates were in action on Thursday, but only the Wilmington Blue Rocks and Arizona Royals managed wins. The Blue Rocks were led to victory by starter John Lamb, who was brilliant while picking up his third win of the season. Click inside to read Thursday's minor league report."

Just another opinion out there about his most recent professional baseball perfomance in the Carolina League as a teenager!

Line of the Day: 06/25/2010

June 2010
SP Edwin Jackson, ARI threw a 150-pitch no-hitter, striking out six and walking eight! He also hit a batter and threw a wild pitch. Not the gem usually associated with a no-hitter but it still counts. Jackson's been all over the place this season, which is reflected in him being owned in only about 50% of leagues. Hopefully this game helps him right the ship but I would wait a start or two to see. Congrats, Edwin Jackson!

Lamb and Blue Rocks solid to start second half of season!

June 2010
A solid start to the second half of the Advanced Class A level season for the Wilmington Blue Rocks, Kansas City Royals affiliation, came off the arm of John Lamb. You can’t do much better than the 2-0 win over the Salem Red Sox in front of the home crowd on Zack Greinke bobble-head night.

John Lamb pitched his longest outing of the season by going six and two-thirds and starting the combined shut-out effort with the Blue Rocks bull-pen. Lamb matched a season high mark of 9 strike-outs during tonight‘s contest, with 2 walks and 4 hits. He did receive some solid help with a defensive effort on an 8-4-2 play at the plate which saw Salvador Perez hold onto the ball following a collision at the plate early in the game. Just enough hitting during this Carolina League pitching duel gave the Blue Rocks the win, which included a big-fly from Eric Hosmer.

Got some encouraging news from the stands, via text messages, that Lamb was 90-94 on the radar guns and commanding all 3 pitches in his pocket during his 15th start of his first full season assignment in professional baseball. The news came from one of the Royals best retired pitchers, Bret Saberhagen, so I am comfortable sharing the back-stop updates on the velocity of my son’s pitches.

The household took a big sigh of relief as Lamb begins the uncharted territory of his minor league career. This is his first full-season since signing with the Kansas City Royals following the 2008 draft selection and we couldn’t be more proud of his 19 year-old efforts.

So now we get to sit back and relax for the next four days until his next start on the hill.

GO BLUE ROCKS!

Are Satellite Dishes UFO Magnets? Any Thoughts?

June 2010

I got an email from Autumnforest (Ghost Hunting Theories) about NGA Earth Satellites being installed in the river bed near Sky Harbor Airport in Phoenix. These are massive military sized satellite dishes installed by National Geospatial Intelligence Agency. This group’s primary mission is to collect, analyze, and distribute geospatial intelligence in support of national security. What that means is they describe, assess, and visually depict physical features and geographically referenced activities on the Earth.

She was wondering if these satellite dishes were UFO magnets because of all the sightings in Phoenix and the surrounding cities. Is the imaging caught on these satellite dishes picking up the bright lights of Phoenix and drawing the UFOs in? I thought it was a great question, so I looked into it but had no luck getting answers. I even emailed MUFON (The Mutual UFO Network) to see if they had any answers or thoughts on the subject. They never got back with me, so I propose the question to you my fine and intelligent bloggers; is it possible that these satellite dishes and others like it are UFO magnets?

“THE HOT CORNER” with Ken Leidheiser

June 2010

In the coming weeks, ASBA will highlight several of our popular instructors who are starring in the minor leagues or independent leagues across the country.  This second feature spotlights Scott Grimes, who has given instruction at the Downingtown facility over his off-seasons.

ASBA INSTRUCTOR SCOTT GRIMES STARRING
FOR YORK IN THE ATLANTIC LEAGUE

Scott Grimes, Leading Off                                    Scott Grimes, York

Now in his 6th pro baseball season, Scott Grimes of Kennett Square is having one of his best years yet.  Playing centerfield and leading off for the York (PA) Revolution in the Atlantic League, Grimes is hitting for both average and power, with a .310 batting average and a .491 slugging percentage.

Grimes, a popular instructor at All Star Baseball’s Downingtown facility in the off-season, has worked hard on his game and it is paying nice dividends in 2010.

“This has been a very good year so far and I really enjoy playing in York in a competitive Independent League,” said Scott.  “York finished dead last in the Atlantic League last year, but changed the roster a lot.  Now the team is much better and we’re playing hard and sitting in first place.  This is my first year in York and it’s going great so far.”

Grimes played high school ball for Kennett HS before taking his skills to Keystone College in Scranton, where he starred as a middle infielder and an outfielder.  He was undrafted out of high school and college but wanted to continue to pursue his dream of playing pro baseball.

“I made the move to the outfield before my senior year in college and it has paid off,” noted Grimes.  “I’m now playing centerfield and leading off for York.  I’m getting a lot of at bats and I’m able to use my speed at the top of the order.”

In 2008, Grimes was named Player of the Year in the independent Can-Am League, as he hit .365 for Worcester with 21 HR’s and 17 steals.  He was then signed by the Mets organization and played for Brooklyn (Class A) and for the Mets’ rookie team in the Gulf Coast League before being released.  York was happy to sign him to a contract for 2010.

The York squad leads the Atlantic League’s Freedom Division with a 34-25 record and is 7-3 in its last 10 games.  Grimes, a 6-0, 200 pounder, has been a spark for the Revolution with 14 doubles, 2 triples, and 7 homers.  He also has scored 57 runs in just 57 games.

“I take pride in being a well-rounded player and I try to be a 5-tool player,” said Scott.  “That’s what everybody is looking for.  I work hard at all aspects of my game, offense, defense and base running, and try to make myself better in each of those areas.”

In a recent 20-2 romp over the Lancaster Barnstomers, Grimes went 6-7 with 2 homers, a double and 6 RBI’s.  He has been on a hot streak of late.  In Tuesday’s win over Somerset, he went 3-5 with a triple and another HR.

“I’m finding the holes,” chuckled Grimes.  “I’m working hard at improving my game and things are working out well right now.  There’s a long way to go in our season but we are enjoying a successful year so far and I’m excited about our team and how we’re doing.”

Grimes also hopes that the major league scouts are keeping on him with the type of year he is producing.  For now, his family is enjoying the trips to York, Lancaster, and Camden to watch him star in the Atlantic League, as he sparks the York Revolution night after night.

Line of the Day: 06/23/2010

June 2010
SP Cliff Lee, SEA pitched his 3rd complete game in his last four starts, striking out nine and walking none. He threw 90 of his 115 pitches for strikes and has only walked four batters THIS SEASON (86.2 IP). Want more stats? How about a 19.0 K/BB ratio? And his 2.39 ERA with a 0.91 WHIP aren't too shabby either. If Lee is auditioning for a mid-season trade, teams are noticing. The Mariners are 11 games under .500 and could get a king's ransom in return for Lee. Sorry, Mariners fans, but your team just isn't getting it done. NOTE: Lee is owned in 98% of Yahoo! leagues and was starter in 88% of them yesterday. Those 10% that didn't start him should quit fantasy baseball (or probably already have).

By winning its last 2 games and coming back from a 7-1 deficit in the third game, the West Chester 13U team has been named the ASBA Team of the Week.

The team lost 10-4 on Saturday morning before winning 3-0 and 9-8 in the Fathers Day Tournament at the Ripken Complex in MD.  Patrick Fagan and Chris Salvey were strong on the mound, with Salvey protecting a lead in the final game against an undefeated Starz team.

Head Coach Kirk Wunderlich said, “The kids played hard and never gave up.  They kept their heads high all weekend.  It’s easy to get down on yourself when you are losing 7-1 (to the Arena Starz), but these guys clawed their way back for a nice victory.”

3B/OF Jose Bautista, TOR was 2-for-3 with (2) HR, (3) RBI and (2) Runs. Bautista's 2nd home run of the game was his major league-leading 20th to go along with 46 runs and 49 RBI. If you can stomach the .232 batting average, you could wind up the recipient of 46 HR, 113 RBI, 106 R and 99 BB at season's end (according to ESPN projections). PS, this is the first time in his career he's eclipsed the 20-HR plateau.

OF Justin Upton, ARI was 3-for-3 with (2) HR, (4) RBI, (4) R, (1) SB and (1) BB. Some owners may still be questioning if he was worthy of such a high pick (ESPN ADP 18.6) with his .256 BA but he's still projecting 105 R, 30 HR, 89 RBI and 26 SB. If he can raise his average to .275, those projections could easily validate his ADP.

AREA YOUTH LEAGUE SPOTLIGHT!

June 2010

Below are summaries and highlights from local Youth League games played over the past week:

ROCKHOUNDS RALLY TO WIN URA MINORS TITLE --

In the URA (Unionville) Minors last week, the Rockhounds rallied from the losers bracket to take the title over the Knights, 9-4 and 4-1.  The Rockhounds had lost to the Knights in the first round of the double elimination tourney, 9-3, but then got red-hot behind the play of Paul Malone, JT Hower, and Jason Moore to win the championship.
Manager Jay Moore was happy with his team’s effort.  “It was a strong defensive performance by our kids that made the difference today.  And everyone contributed at the plate too,” he noted.

Malone got the win on the mound in the 9-4 win and had a double with 2 RBI’s.  Foster Loyer was 2-3 with 2 runs scored and Hower was 2-3 with 3 RBI’s.  Jason Moore was 1-3 with a big double and Justin McLellen also contributed at the plate.  Robbie Schofield came on in relief and got the final outs for the Hounds.

For the Knights, Jack Adams and Theron Schilling had a great series, both at the plate and with their stellar defense and pitching.

YANKEES TOP GIANTS IN NEWTOWN EDGMONT ROUND ROBIN PLAY—

In the 11-12 year old Newtown Edgmont Majors, the Yankees stormed past the Giants last week, 7-2.  Dan Duffy did a great job on the mound for the Yankees and got the win.  Big hitters were Bobby Halligan (double and RBI) and Sean Clinton (double and 2 runs scored) for the winners.

“I’m real happy to get the win, and we had great pitching performances, “ said winning manager Dan Duffy.  “We knew we had to bring our best game to beat the Giants, as they were at the top of our league standings next to the A’s.”

Big Steppin

June 2010
I thought that it would start the week with the zany antics of Zak and Aaron of Ghost Adventures. They have been doing these Big Steppin videos at various places they have visited. I do miss those silly ol' frat boys.

A little Father's Day reflection...

June 2010
As a professional baseball fan, scout and father of a prospect, yesterday was more than just a Father’s Day celebration to me. My son, John, started my day off with a phone call from Wilmington, DE. It is always great to hear his voice as he continues his journey in professional baseball. He sounded a little eager to relax following Sunday’s afternoon game with a 3 day mid-season break from the first full-season of his career. Sure, I wish he had received some love from the Carolina League coaches that determined the All-Star roster, but he has plenty more years for that type of acknowledgement for his performance on the field.

Recently, I have returned to the dugout in the Southern California area with a local Connie Mack team. Our game yesterday, brought some emotions while watching some of the Dads get hugs from their boys following the order by the head coach. Bobby Gould, a long time friend, through professional baseball, has always been a true pleasure to share a dugout with through some of his special antics he is known for.

Reflecting on the drive home, I remembered that I have not had my son, or daughter for that matter, around me on Father’s Day for the last five years. John was busy playing baseball in Ohio with the Midland Redskins organization, on their Mickey Mantle team the Braves, for two years, starting in 2006 and obviously on the road in pro ball the last three years. My daughter, Cayla, is another long story, but not for this site. I am very proud of both of my kids for their accomplishments.

Not sure when John Lamb will be on the bump again, but you can be rest assured we will be listening on the radio with tremendous pride and excitement as he starts the second half of the 2010 season. Our left coast side of the family wishes the Blue Rocks well during the break and a successful second half of the season in the Carolina League.

GO ROCKS!

Line of the Day: 06/20/2010

June 2010
SP Carl Pavano, MIN tossed a complete game four-hitter at Philadelphia versus Roy Halladay. Complete games are a thing of the past and deserve recognition, especially against Halladay and the Phillies lineup. Pavano has gone at least seven innings in 10 of his last 11 starts. He doesn't normally strike out many batters (5.14 K/9) but doesn't walk many either (1.31 BB/9). He will take a lump or two pitching to as much contact as he does, but Pavano is proving a worthy fantasy baseball asset this deep into the season that should be owned (36% E; 38% Y!) in almost all league formats.

June 2010
SP Jake Peavy, CHW threw a complete game, three-hit shutout versus the Nationals, walking two and striking out seven. He retired a career-high 20 batters in a row, not allowing a hit after the second inning. It was nice to see his shoulder issues were a non-factor tonight.

Where Have the Drive-ins Gone?

June 2010

While driving home from my Mother’s house, I noticed a couple of vacant lots where a drive-in once stood. I have many fantastic memories of watching movies at a drive-in here in Phoenix. One would think we were nuts going to an outdoor movie theater in the 100 degree temperature, but we never was bothered by it.

I have memories of my Mom popping a big bag of popcorn, dumping lots of butter and salt on it, and packing the cooler full of our favorite soda pop. At one time they were charging by the car load, and then by each person per car. People would get clever and stuff a few live bodies in the trunk to save a buck or two. They would park in the back where it was dark and unload their buddies.

Once inside you drove around to find the perfect place to park, preferably somewhere in the center. After you find your spot, then it’s back and forth to make sure you are close to the speaker and at the right angle to see the screen. The speaker attached to your door’s window and if you were lucky, you got a speaker that worked. Most of the time the sound was bad and you could barely hear the movie. While the kiddies played in the playground near the screen, the parents would set up the seats and blankets. When the movie started, the kids would return and try to sit still and watch the movie. Most of the time we just wore our pajamas and fell asleep before the second movie ended. It was the perfect place for a family with kids to enjoy a movie. It was also perfect for those who steamed up their car’s windows and didn’t appear to care what was playing.

When my kids were little, they came up with multi screens drive-ins. We have one in Glendale with 6 screens that we often took the kids with us to see a movie or two. We usually went with other families, sat in the back of the chosen theater where you had a great view of the other movies playing in the next theaters . We still brought the popcorn and candy, but along with the soda pop we had beer and water. Once in awhile a friend would bring something a wee bit stronger than beer to put in the soda. We had lots of fun partying with our friends at the theater while the kiddies played games and watched the movies.

We did have a funny experience while trying to watch “Greystoke, the Legend of Tarzan”, a horrible movie in my opinion. We were sitting at the back of one of the Glendale Six theaters with a few good friends, drinking and talking and not really paying any attention to the movie. All of a sudden from the theater right behind us, we hear this loud moaning. We turned around and saw an old VW beetle just rocking back and forth. We decided to turn our chairs around to watch the action behind us, which was more entertaining than the movie. The moaning got louder and bug was a rockin’, so we cheered them on. A friend said, “I wonder how they were able to do it in such a small car?” Right after he said that, the male’s foot went through the windshield after a very loud moan (can you say orgasm). We heard him say, “Oh shit” as he tried to get up. We continued to cheer them on as they finally got out of the car. They were good sports and took a bow for us. That was so frickin’ funny!

In 1932, a Richard M. Hollingshead Jr., a chemical company giant, created the first drive-in theater in Camden, New Jersey. He first tested the outdoor theater in his driveway at his home, nailing a screen to trees in his backyard. He sat a 1928 Kodak projector on the hood of his car and put a radio behind the screen. He checked the different sound levels with the car’s windows up and down. He put blocks under his car to get an idea of the size and spacing of the ramps so every car will have a clear view of the screen. On May 16, 1933, he was given a U.S. Patent for his invention. Hollingshead’s drive-in opened in New Jersey on June 6, 1933, near the airport. The drive-in had 500 places for cars to park, and a 40 by 50 foot screen. He advertised the outdoor theater with the slogan, “The whole family is welcome, regardless of how noisy the children are”. His drive-in was only opened three years, but while it was in operation, other states started opening their own outdoor theaters. (Wikipedi)

Today Arizona only has three open drive-ins, with two of them being multi-screened. All that is left of the other theaters are empty lots, other buildings and memories of a time that has gone by. Speaking of memories, I found the Cheech and Chong drive-in skit they did in the 70’s, “Pedro and Man at the Drive-Inn”. For some it will bring back memories and for the youngin’s, enjoy… (I hope it works)

Line of the Day: 06/18/2010

June 2010
1B Ryan Howard, PHI was 4-for-4 with a double, triple and two home runs, for a total of 13 bases. Add in three runs and three RBI and this is one of the best lines I've seen in a while. BEAST! ESPN projects Howard to finish with 32 HR, 122 RBI and 102 Runs.

Pierce Greenleaf's ASBA 14U Team BLOG-- Week #2

June 2010

Hey everyone, my name is Pierce Greenleaf. I play for the 14U All Star Baseball Academy team. I have been playing for ASBA, summer and fall, since I was 11, but we were called the Blue Claws then.  I was given the chance to write about our ASBA Downingtown summer team and report about both the serious and funny events of our season.

Here is my second weekly report on our summer team:

My ASBA 14U team traveled all the way to Virginia for our tournament last weekend.  The trip took around five hours one way and was a physically draining ride for everyone, especially the parents.  The tournament was called the Virginia Open State Champions, so that would explain why a lot of the kids were big.  Our first game, at 5 o’clock, was against the IYG Spiders and after the first two innings, thunderstorms came into the area. The game was delayed for about 45 minutes.  During those first two innings, we were hitting the ball and fielding the ball very well.  But the other team had added players from their 15U team for this tournament and one of them came into pitch in relief.  After that, our bats were silent and our fielding went out the door. We lost 8-2.

Our next game was 30 minutes afterwards and we played under the lights against the Diamond Longhorns.  The first inning was a carry-over of the first game and we went up by four runs.  Just like the first game, we hit horribly.  I think we got 2 hits, maybe.  The umpires at that game were very picky.  I got called for a balk on a third to first move because my foot never came off the rubber. Our coach, Keith Falcone, was not happy at all about that call, but we didn’t hit at all so Keith was more upset about that than the balk.  We lost 10-1.

On Sunday, we played at 10:15.  We had a shaky first inning, but got through it.  Our bats showed signs of waking up for a moment, but after the first three innings, we didn’t get one hit. This game, we didn't field the ball or  throw strikes, and we ended up losing 8-2.  This past weekend, we looked like the Phillies up to bat, couldn’t throw strikes, and could not field the ball.  I hope that this poor play is now out of our systems, so we can move on and win a few games.  Our team's attitude is still positive and I'm looking to do my part to pull us out of this little slump.  The Phillies can do it and so can we!

Line of the Day: 06/17/2010

June 2010
SP Ubaldo Jimenez, COL continues to dominate hitters. He pitched eight innings for the win allowing eight hits but just one earned run while walking two and striking out four. He's now 13-1 in 14 starts with a Pedro Martinez-esque ERA of 1.15 and a 1.00 WHIP. WOW!

Lamb good in Salem, but not not enough for the win...

June 2010
With John Lamb getting the ball tonight on the bump against the Salem Red Sox in Salem, VA he has matched last year’s effort of 14 starts. Although still a pup by most professional baseball standards, Lamb continues to perform at all levels in the minor leagues.

Wilmington Blue Rocks versus Salem Red Sox was seen by more than 3,763 fans with two of the league’s best pitchers. Lamb and Huntzinger both did their jobs entertaining the crowd and giving their respective team an opportunity to win.

The Rocks have struggled all year to beat the Sox and tonight was no different. Lamb pitched well to hold the Sox to only 2 runs, 1 earned, 6 hits, 6 strike-outs and 1 walk during his six innings of work. Lamb handed the ball to Mozingo with a 2-1 deficit in the bottom of the 7th. Mozingo took the loss later in the game when the Sox took back the lead in the 8th inning.

Huntzinger pitched exceptionally well for his seven inning performance. Without taking anything away from his strike throwing ability, it must be mentioned that the Blue Rocks continued aggressive approach at the plate allowed Huntzinger to use only 56 pitches to get his 21 outs. Not sure why he did not continue to throw in the 8th inning with such a low pitch count, but surely a surprise when the Sox went to their bull-pen.

Adam Frost who was just recently called up from Burlington, IA tied the game with a solo home-run in the top of the 8th inning for the Blue Rocks. However, the lead was short lived due to the Sox taking back the lead in the bottom of the same inning. The Rocks lost the game and were swept in the series to put an end to the eight day road-trip.

The Blue Rocks return home tomorrow for a short series and the All-Star break before another short series with the same Salem Red Sox in Wilmington, DE to start off the second half of the professional baseball season in advanced a level.

LETS GO ROCKS!

Waiver Saviors: 06/17/2010

June 2010
Here are some names of note that are widely available in ESPN and Yahoo! leagues in the latest installment of Waiver Saviors:

  • 2B/OF Sean Rodriguez, TB (41% E; 18% Y!) was an early season sleeper while tearing it up during Spring Training but crawled out of the gate by hitting only .184 in April. Well Rodriguez is hitting .367 in June with 3 HR, 12 RBI and 3 SB. Anyone producing and playing regularly in the Rays lineup deserves to be owned.
  • OF Corey Patterson, BAL (0.3% E; 1% Y!) is worth the look if you are desperate for steals. Over the last seven days, Patterson is 10/29 (.345 BA) with 4 SB. I said "desperate", didn't I?
  • OF Andres Torres, SF (26% E; 17% Y!) is hitting .293 on the season with 30 runs and 11 stolen bases. His defense has kept him in the lineup and the offense has been a pleasant surprise for owners that keep sending him out there.
  • C John Buck, TOR (24% E; 36% Y!) is sporting a .265/24/12/35/0 line this season and should be owned even in the shallowest of leagues. He's crept up to the number three catcher on ESPN's Player Rater and the inaugural nominee of COSFBA's "Line of the Day".
  • SP Jonathon Niese, NYM (21% E; 14% Y!) is riding a nice three-game winning streak (23 IP, 15 H, 4 ER, 0.78 WHIP) and could be a nice addition to any fantasy baseball staff while he's hot.
  • SP/RP David Hernandez, BAL (4% E; 9% Y!) has given up four hits and allowed one earned run in 8.2 IP since being moved to the bullpen. Oh, by the way, he's also recorded two saves and recorded a win. Alfredo Simon is active but Hernandez still got the call on the O's last save opp. Keep an eye on how this plays out but both may be worth owning if your league uses holds.
I know you can find this information on your own or even rely on sites that have a full staff of writers and researchers, but I hope you come to COSFBA and visit often to read and appreciate one man's take on a game (baseball and fantasy baseball) that he loves so much.

Follow me on Twitter and check me out on Facebook, especially if you are a Colorado-based fantasy baseball player.

Tonight, Lamb will be pitching on six days of rest!

June 2010
John Lamb is scheduled to be the starting pitcher for tonight’s game in Salem, VA against the Red Sox. This start will match last year’s efforts for Lamb with his 14 appearance on the mound. With an extra day off between starts due to an off day this past Monday, we are looking forward to hearing the game on the Blue Rocks radio broadcast starting at 7:05 ET.

Wilmington has struggled in all of the previous games versus Salem this year. The Sox have taken eight of their nine meetings with Wilmington this season. The lone loss for Salem came in the first meeting, by one run. Two of its subsequent seven straight successes also saw a one-run final margin. Salem has averaged 7.6 tallies per game against the Blue Crew in nearly doubling Wilmington's scoring output, 68-35.

The Lamb family wishes all the Blue Rocks the best tonight as they conclude their last road trip before the All-Star break.

GO ROCKS!
