Freaky Flicks: The Haunting in Connecticut

March 2009
The Haunting in Connecticut is a film that is supposedly based of the true story of the Snedeker family who is tormented by spirits in their quaint little Connecticut home. The house, 208 Meriden Avenue in Southington, Connecticut, was apparently an old mortuary. According to the family, all the mortician equipment and tools were still in the basement. I don't know to much about the "true" story in terms of what they claimed went down, but I do know that it really isn't a "true" story. It's true in the fact that this family claimed these events occurred, but like the Ammityville case, it was proven to be primarily a hoax. But with this story, I don't know how much is a hoax. I know that the husband and wife's (Al and Carmen) story contradicted each others and an investigator told them to "doll" up their story to make it more scary. Apparently none of them could get their story straight. This story was told in a 1992 biopic book titled "In A Dark Place: The Story of a True Haunting". The author, Ray Garton, wanted to publish the book as a FICTIONAL story but due to the contract he was bound to, he had to label it "a true story". The story was then told on a TV documentary of the same title as the 2009 movie.

So now we have the major motion picture version starring Oscar nominated actress Virginia Madsen (Sideways). It tells the story of the family (changed to the Campbell family) who is forced to relocate to Connecticut due to their sons health, who has cancer. He is involved in a special case study, but his future looks grim and is not expected to live much longer. The husband still lives back in their other house due to his job and travels back and forth. He is a drunk. Soon the sick boy starts to experience some paranormal events and at first it's just him. He thinks he is hallucinating but he can't say anything because that means the treatment isn't working. But soon the other children start to experience things. The older kids enlist the help of a reverend who also has the same cancer as the son. The kids also unearth the house's past. This is when a lot of the chaos starts to happen and even momma starts to experience things. I won't go into anymore detail about the plot.

I was expecting to be fully dissapointed by this movie. To often we have haunted house movies that seem to be based off true stories, that really just fall flat on ever aspect. They are never really scary, and usually are always predictable. Also some of the previews threw me off. I mean look at the poster, it looks some weird blobby ghost thing is protruding out of some kids mouth. The preview made it look like way to much was going on. But in the final product...it was actually pretty good for me. I found some good, solid points in the movie. There were more than enough moments that really got me spooked. Genuinely freaked! I even jumped about three times, which NEVER happens to me anymore. But this movie caught me off guard a few times.

I also appreciated the story. It never was over the top. You see all the time in these Japanese horror remakes that the story overtakes the whole production and it becomes so elaborate to the point of just not making any sense or we just don't care anymore. But the "investigation" aspect of this story does not come into play until a good three fourths into the movie and really just takes up one or two scenes, then it all unfolds past that. Now that back story to the house isn't all that great or original...but it worked for this movie. It made sense with the "hauntings" that were happening. And the blobby thing? It was ectoplasm. Maybe still a tad over the top for story purposes, but I was able to get over it rather quickly...it is actually a key point in the back story. The effects of it were pretty cool though! I've even included this scene right down below for your entertainment!

Also really good performances, which surprised me. Madsen has been a hit or miss actress in her career and I'll admit I've never seen her Oscar nominated role. But I thought she was a perfect choice for this role. She made a great mom figure. She looked and acted like a real mom. Sometimes the mom's are always some hot chick with a big chest. Madsen is certainly not "ugly" but she isn't Angelina, if you know what I mean. Sometimes when you cast pretty people in these roles, it becomes distracting and annoying. Her oldest son played by Kyle Gallner, was also a good pick. He plays the sick, depressed kid rather well! His expressions kind of got a bit annoying at times though. His face was always droopy and I don't think he EVER smiles...but he DOES have cancer in the film, so what should I expect.

My major issue with this movie was that it became to cliche with the scare tactics. I don't think I've ever seen so many jump scenes in a movie before. There were a few scenes where there were up to five jump moments in one scene alone...just back to back to back. It got the audience, and all the girls screamed, but it just become tiresome after a while. I was getting pissed off by it. It was the old open the door with the mirror on it and nothing reflects, then close it and suddenly theres a decomposed body reflecting. Of course ALL these jump scenes are accompanied by obnoxious high pitched music or sound effects that aren't actually being experienced by the people in the movie...just by us, the audience. Usually it's the sounds the scare us, not what's happening. Movies need to rely more on genuine eye scares and not sound effect scared. By like I said earlier, there were some jump moments that really did get me good! Touche movie!

Also I didn't care for the "ghost" effects. I'm really getting tired of seeing the ghosts in movies. Especially in this movie, wee see them as carved up, or bloodied up, or burnt. They are full human ghosts, not even see through ghosts. To me, and I think for most human minds, the scariest things are the things we cannot see. Why not have doors close and open by themselves? Why not have phantom footsteps running or walking around? Why not have tapping on walls? Why not have soft whispers coming from a dark hallway? Or ghostly screams or cries coming from upstairs when no one is there? THAT is unsettling, not these cheesy zombie ghost effects. However, there still was a few unsettling moments that stuck with me after the film...but have since been erased from my mind.

Overall, I was very pleasantly surprised by this movie. Pretty cool storyline, good performances, and some legit unsettling scares. I was just taken back by the usual horror movie tricks and cliches we have grown accustomed to. Come one Hollywood...be a little bold, be a little original. Stop using the "same old, same old" routine and go outside the box for once. You will be shocked at what the final product looks like...and so will your audiences!

I recommend this movie for fans of a good ghost tale or just a fun horror movie. That's what it is...fun, entertaining. You won't get anything from it other than some cool scares and a cool little plot. So why not enjoy a movie like that!

I give this movie ***1/2 out of *****

The Spirit World

March 2009
Spiritualism is the belief that the dead survive as spirits which can communicate with the living through a third party, a medium. According to the philosophical doctrine of spiritualism, spirits inhabit a world in itself known as the ‘Spirit World’. This world is the vessel where other worlds come through and is independent from the ‘material’ world. Some Spiritualist believe that we are spiritual beings living on this earth for only a certain amount of time and living in the physical realm for a reason. They also believe that the human’s soul can live beyond the physical body’s existence. We live in the physical realm, temporarily, learning enough lessons to move on to the spiritual world. Spiritualists believe in spiritual evolution and that the substance of the physical and spiritual worlds is connected with one another and is developing gradually. Many feel that the Spirit World is where ghosts or spirits go after death.

The Plains Native Americans have a strong belief in a Great Spirit and the Spirit World. This Great Spirit is powerful and has a great ability over everything on Earth. The Earth is the mother of all spirits, and the Sun, which gives the earth warmth and light, has a great power. Many visions that are in their dreams are believed to be a sign from the spirits. The Medicine Man was usually sought out to interpret the dreams and any visions or signs one might have. Often times, animals, like game, was killed as an offering to the spirits.

Some Atheists, including some scientists, feel they need more proof of the existence of the Spirit World before they will give any validity to this subject. They will usually deny any realm beyond this real world and would rather have someone else prove its existence.

Whether you believe in the Spirit World or not, the existence of anything beyond this physical realm is possible.

Who is Outside My House?

March 2009
I live in a 50 year old house and isn't considered haunted by any means. Strange things have happened to us the 16 years we have lived there. My daughter's stereo's volume moved up and down on its own depending on what she was listening too. I dismissed that as a loose knob and a car or truck driving by vibrating the knob having it turn one way or another, but this wasn't always true. I have heard voices on occasions especially while in bed sleeping. Sometimes it will be a quiet "Mom", waking me up and expecting to see my daughter who wasn't there. I hear my name called on occasions too. My dogs also had shown strange behavior, growling and barking at nothing. My Golden Retriever did this lots of times. In my peripheral vision, I always see quick flashes of what appears to be someone or something darting past. Sometimes it just might be my hair falling in my face or something moving outside, then there are other times I just don't know. Non of these experiences scare me. They may startle me with it first happens but afterwards I try to find a reason.

This brings me to Monday. I got up from my couch to go to into the kitchen. As I came around the corner I saw someone go past our kitchen window towards the front door. My dogs looked up as I waited to see if our doorbell would ring or maybe it was the mail-lady. No one past back by the window so I walked up to it to look out. We have an enclosed porch so there is only one way in and out. I saw no one and went outside to further investigate. There was no mail in the box and no one outside as far as I could see. I was very puzzled by this. I saw it with both eyes and my dogs reacted as if someone was there. Then an hour later, my daughter came home from work and wanted to watch "Amazing Race" which I recorded from the night before. After we got comfortable, I grabbed the remote to start the show. I looked up at her and behind her was a window looking into our backyard. All of a sudden, that person was back and looking in the window, then quickly dashed away. I jumped up, ran to the window and saw nothing. If someone was there, I would have seen them running. What I saw looked like a person but moved quickly so I wasn't able to get a clear look at them. Both times it startled me but I wasn't afraid, just curious. I know I saw something, just not sure what or who it was. Maybe it's just my very playful guardian angel.

It seems that the more I learn about paranormal activity the more my mind it wide open to any possibilities. I have had strange occurrences throughout my life but now I am trying to find answers to feed my curiosity.

The Legend of Boggy Creek

March 2009
As long as I can remember I have had a fascination with Bigfoot. This elusive creature has gone by many names such as, Sashquatch, Yeti, Red Gorilla, and Abdominal Snowman to name a few. My fear of the Abdominal Snowman went all the way back to my young years with the animated movie, “Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer”. You laugh, but you all know that he scared you as well. Then in 1972, I went to the theatre with my friends to see the film, “The Legend of Boggy Creek”, about the “Fouke Monster”. This semi-factual documentary-type film dealt with the alleged Bigfoot like cryptid that was seen around Fouke, Arkansas since the 1940’s. The film partially features interviews with witnesses that have had encounters with the human-like creature and reenactments of those encounters by actors. Charles B. Pierce used an old movie camera and hired local high school students to make this 89 minute film. The reenactments are cheesy by modern standards but as a young kid, it scared the crap out of me.

The Legend of Boggy Creek is out to track down the existence and legend of the “Fouke Monster” as seen by those living in and around the town of Fouke for many years. This Bigfoot has been described as having a foul odor, covered with reddish-brown hair, standing at least 8 feet tall and probably weighing around 300 pounds. It appears to have three toes as reported from the tracks that have been seen in the farm fields. Many of the locals that have seen or came across this elusive Bigfoot are seen in the film as themselves telling their stories. They tell stories of how the creature killed many animals as well as 100 pound h
ogs, and then ate them. We also follow some hunters with their dogs looking for the creature. The dogs sense something in the air and will not move or give chase. The narrator of the movie tells us that people have shot at the creature in the past but it has been able to escape without harm. Other stories are from locals including a police deputy of having the creature dart out in front of their car while driving down a dark road. The most frightening story of the whole film was the story of the attack of the Ford family in their own home in May of 1971. According to Elizabeth Ford, the creature tried to seize her through a screen window, while she was sleeping on the couch. The next day Bobby Ford had his own experience while on his front porch. The creature grabbed him on his shoulders, throwing him to the ground. He had to be treated at the hospital for mild shock. The Fords said they have heard something moving outside their house many times especially on the nights of the encounters. The next day they found footprints, heavy scratches on the porch and damages to the house’s exterior. At the end of the movie, the narrator questions whether or not the “Fouke Monster” is still alive or still out in the marsh lands in and around Fouke, Arkansas.

The question to whether it is still alive could be a resounding yes because of the reports of sightings to this day. The “Fouke Monster” has also been referred to as the legendary swamp creature the “Skunk Ape” which gets its name from the nasty skunk-like odor it leaves. Many Bigfoot enthusiasts as well as cable shows like MonsterQuest, have sent investigators and Bigfoot experts out in the woods or murky swamps to track down some evidence that this creature does indeed exist. You can watch the entire movie on youtube.com if you are interested.

Urban Legends: My Own Suicidal Homicide?!

March 2009
So as you may know, we started a new series of blogs about Urban Legends. Some of them will be famous ones we all know about, and some, like the one I will talk about today, are not very known at all. Also, usually we discuss things of at least some paranormal significance, this urban legend really isn't that. However, this is one of my favorite urban legends so I thought it might be neat to tell you all about it. In a way, it is slightly creepy. At least to me it was.

I first learned of this legend from the 1999 Academy Award nominated film "Magnolia". Magnolia is hands down one of my top three favorite films of all time. Tom Cruise and Jullianne Moore deliver two of my all time favorite movie performances in a cast that is simply breathtaking. The ending (slightly spoiled in the movie poster pictured above) is one of the quirkiest but most surprising turns I've ever seen a film make, and it was a masterful ending once you get the meaning behind it. The film also has my all time favorite opening sequence. Let me explain:

The opening scene is about four minutes long. It tells three short stories that are narrated by actor and illusionist Ricky Jay. All three stories are relatively unknown urban legends. The point of the stories is to deliver the message that not everything happens by coincidence and chance, and that sometimes very odd things simply just happen. And these things happen all the time. It's very meaningful for the overall essence of the BRILLIANT film. I want to mention of the stories from the opening scene today.

This legend was originally told at forensic science convention in the 60's. It is said this legend was used as a teaching tool for how to charge certain odd crimes. This is one of those VERY odd crimes. The story goes that a young man attempts to commit suicide by jumping of the 9th story rooftop of his apartment building. The suicide attempt was confirmed by a note in his pocket. The young man was fed up with this constantly arguing parents and wanted to end it all and be with God. The young man jumps, and midway down he is shot through the stomach by a shot gun bullet and is killed instantly before even hitting the ground.

Back up a little bit. In a 6th story apartment a couple is arguing ferociously and all the neighbors can hear this, as they usually do. It is a husband and wife, and apparently they always fight with a shotgun pointing at one of them. The wife is a bit crazy. The gun is not typically loaded. The argument heats up to the highest level and the wife pulls the trigger. She misses her husband and the bullet goes out the window, shattering the glass and hits a person who is falling from the roof.

Now it turns out that the arguing couple...are the parents of the boy who just jumped off the roof. They are the parents of the boy who just jumped off the roof AND was shot and killed by their shotgun. A young boy in the building who is a friend of the young man who killed himself comes forward. He tells the police that the young man intentionally loaded the shotgun knowing full well his parents would use it in an argument. He wanted his parents to kill each other, because that's what he thought they wanted to do anyway with all the yelling and abuse. His plan was for his whole family to perish that day, including himself. He was not expecting to be shot by the bullet he loaded into the gun.

Here's another odd fact: just a few days prior, an awning was installed on the bottom level. This awning would have caught the young man and saved his life...but he had a giant hole in his stomach and was dead before he got to the awning.

It took some time for the police to figure this crime out. Eventually the young man's parents were arrested. The mother was charged for the murder of her own son. The young man...was charged and noted as an accomplice in own murder.

To me this is one of the most bizarre and interesting urban legends I have ever heard. There aren't really a lot of stories online about it, but it is featured in this film. And I just wanted to let you all in on it! Hope you enjoyed it!

Also, I know you just read all that, but I have included the clip from the film "Magnolia" below. The clip is a segment from the opening scene of the film that pretty much explains and shows you what I just wrote about. You should watch it, it's a really well done scene.

Urban Legend: When a Stranger Calls

March 2009
Many stories are handed down from generation to generation in the form a modern folklore or urban legends. Urban legends are stories that are spread in various forms that are usually false though believed to be real by those telling them. Some believe that they are based on real events making the tales even more twisted. The substance of these stories usually consists of humor or horror. Sometimes the stories are told around campfires or at slumber parties with the person telling the story holding a flashlight under their chin for visual effects. Many horror movies are based on urban legends of one sort of another. One of the stories circulating around is the one about the babysitter. The horror/thriller movie, "When a Stranger Calls", was based on this very story and scared many of us from babysitting other people's children. I saw the 1979 version of the movie in the theatre with my friends. I am the biggest chicken when it comes to watching horror flicks even though I still loved to watch them. In 1979 there were fewer theatres so waiting in long lines was typical so you wasn't sure which show time you would make. Most of the time I just hated it when a tall person sat in front of me except during a horror flick. But as luck or lack of luck would have it, we ended up in the second row and had a perfectly clear view of the screen. Now I had to depend on squinting my eyes or looking through the fence fingers during the intense scenes. The fence fingers are just my hand in front of my face with my fingers slightly apart enough for me to see the movie. The first part of the movie, which starred Carol Kane as the babysitter, was based on the babysitter urban legend. The story begins with Jill (Kane) at the home of a doctor and his wife watching their children. The children are upstairs sleeping when Jill's terror begins. She receives a phone call from a mysterious man asking her questions about what she is doing and asking “have you checked the children”? At first, she just dismisses the calls as a practical joke but the calls kept coming along with more frightening threats. She becomes so scared that she calls the police. They told her that she needed to keep him on the phone long enough so they can trace the call. Now watch the video and see what happens next.

Although this story has been told many times with different variations of what happen, the basic story is still the same. Some stories say that the babysitter hears heavy breathing with the killing telling her that he is coming to get her. The part where she calls the police, they trace the call and tell her to “get out” because the man is inside the house, is basically the same. The killer getting away and the children being dead are also told the same in this Urban Legend.

The movie, “When a Stranger Calls” goes beyond the Urban Legend letting us know what may have happened afterwards. (If you haven’t seen it then maybe you would not want to read on.) The middle of the movie is slow where we follow the killer, Curt, after he escapes from the asylum and the retired detective, Clifford, tracking him down. We now find Jill as an adult, married with children of her own. Curt just happens to find out where she was living from a newspaper article. Jill and Stephen, her husband, go out to dinner and get a babysitter to watch their two kids. Jill receives a call at the restaurant, answers it only to have the creepy voice of Curt on the other end asking, “Have you checked the children?” Jill freaks out; they call the police and head home to find everything just fine with the babysitter and the children. Later, we see Jill having trouble sleeping, as you can imagine, and in the kitchen getting milk when all of a sudden, the lights go out. She heads back to bed and hears what appears to be Curt’s chilling voice whispering to her from the closet where the door is ajar. She shakes her husband, trying to wake him up, but it was Curt that was in bed with her. He rips her nightgown, chases her around the room, trying to kill her. Officer Clifford shows up in time to shoot Curt and kill him. Jill’s husband was knocked out in the closet and still alive.

During the climax of this movie, I hid my eyes, my friend Mary grabbed my leg and dug her nails in, and my friend Deb’s popcorn, (whatever she had left) was all over the place. Oh my, we sure enjoyed that adrenalin rush. You can’t beat a good horror/thriller movie that has an intense ending. I have seen the more current version of this movie but did not care for it.

There are many urban legends out there; this is just one of them. Look for Mike and myself to blog about other urban legends that have movies made from them or the ones we just like to talk about.

The Stanley Hotel

March 2009
The Stanley Hotel is a place that Mike and I have always wanted to go to. Now that our friend, Crystal another TAGO member, moved near there, we are planning a hopeful visit this year.
One of the most beautiful places I had the pleasure to visit was Estes Park, Colorado. I remember the long drive on the wining roads witnessing the most incredible scenery on this earth. Nestled in this serene place, within the Rocky Mountain National Park, is The Stanley Hotel which has the most picturesque panoramic view of the Rockies. The Stanley hotel can boast having many famous guests like Margaret Brown (the unsinkable Molly Brown, Titanic), John Philip Sousa, Theodore Roosevelt and other Hollywood celebrities. In 1903, Freelan O. Stanley, inventor of the Stanley Steamer along with his brother, came to Estes Park suffering from tuberculosis on the suggestion of his doctor. He and his wife stayed in a cabin while Stanley saw vast improvement in his health. They were so grateful for his improving health and loved the beautiful valley of Estes Park; they knew that their future was there. In 1909, the Stanley Hotel was opened as a classy, elegant, upstanding, Georgian style hotel that was designed with the rich and famous in mind. With its long history and tragic accidents, The Stanley Hotel has its fare share of haunted stories.

The Stanley Hotel was the inspiration for the novel, “The Shining” written by Stephen King. The 1980 movie was directed by Stanley Kubrick, who also co-wrote the screenplay and starred Jack Nicholson as a tormented writer. His ability to see ghost called, ‘the shining’, drove him mad to where he tried to kill his wife and son. King and his wife did stay at the hotel in 1973 and were the only ones staying there at the time. They had their share of strange phenomenon while staying in room 217. In 1911 that room had a gas leak and explosion, killing the maid, Mrs. Wilson. It is told that her spirit still lingers in that room. After Mr. and Mrs. King put their luggage in the room, they went downstairs for at least 45 minutes. When they returned, their clothes were put away in the dresser drawers and the luggage was stacked in the closet. Looks like Mrs. Wilson is still cleaning that room. Many of the other rooms have similar reports of paranormal activity.

The Music Room had reports of a piano playing on his own where either Mr. or Mrs. Stanley loved to play the piano.
The Billiard Room has also had reports of the apparition of Mr. Stanley hanging around watching the guests.
The MacGregor Room is where sightings of people wearing period clothing are attending a party. They appeared to be on continuous reel, repeating the same scenes, not noticing any live humans watching them. Some of the cooks working at the Stanley Hotel have heard a party going on in that room, opened the door to check it out, and no one was in there. This room was used by Stephen King for his “The Shining”, mini series for all the ghostly party scenes.

In the Lobby, the apparition of F. O. Stanley himself has been seen staring at the night clerk, and then just disappearing. While behind the front desk, a bellman heard footsteps from the Bar and saw a reflection of a woman in the window but found no one there. Also, books have been reported flying off the shelves and the elevators operating on their own.
The fourth floor is believed to have the most ghostly activity in the hotel. This floor used to house the servants quarters and is where the ghost children like to play and run up and down the hallways. These children, a boy and a girl with blonde hair, were told to be the children of a maid that worked there. Stephen King himself saw the ghost children while on the fourth floor. People staying there have reported seeing balls being thrown up and down the hallway like it were being thrown between two children. The children can also be heard in room 418 where some have seen an indention of a person on the bed when there was no one there. Room 401 is one of the most haunted rooms in the hotel where jewelry and other personal items have been reported missing while lying on the nightstand. An apparition of a man and woman has been seen grabbing the items, running in the closet and disappearing. When Ghost Hunters did their first investigation of the hotel, Jason slept in that room. The video recorder caught the sound of the creaking closet door unlatching and opening up, then shortly afterwards, the glass on the nightstand broke. Upon further investing the glass, it looked like it was broken from the inside which puzzled Jason. His camera also caught the sound of the closet door shutting and latching itself. The closet door was examined by Jason and Grant but they could not find anyway that the door could have unlatched itself. That would take some force to do that, and then open. Creepy! Room 407 is where the ghost of Lord Dunraven has been seen standing by the bathroom door. Also in this room, the bathroom lights turn on and off with unseen hands while an apparition has been seen looking out the window. Room 412 has the strangest story of them all. One evening a lady staying in the room with her husband started screaming for no reason. She told the hotel employees that while on the bed she felt energy like someone was trying to take over her body. While the employees were trying to take her to the ambulance for a trip to the hospital, she fought them all the way. After she was examined, they found no drugs or alcohol in her system and were completely puzzled on why she had this outburst. She did not remember any of it at all.
Many of the surrounding buildings have also had their share of reports of paranormal sightings. The Managers residence has been visited often by the ghost of F. O. Stanley. In room 1302 on the third floor of the nearby hall, a playful spirit doesn’t appreciate the hard work of the maids that clean and straighten the room. After cleaning the room, a maid stepped outside the room with the head housekeeper. Within minutes the head housekeeper looked in the room to check it out and found the lamps on the floor and all the pictures had fallen off the wall. They were right outside the room and heard nothing. On their second night of investigating the Stanley Hotel, TAPS members, Grant, Tango and Lisa were in room 1302 where Tango felt like they were being watched. Grant was at the table near the window changing the tape on the video camera they had set up. As the camera man came over to shine a light so Grant could see what he was doing, the table moved and the chair lifted up and slammed against the wall. The two of them were very startled as you can imagine. Only the edge of the table was caught moving on film but it was not enough to use as solid evidence.

Most of the rooms have many reports of paranormal activity at one time or another. Guests and employees are always reporting sightings even to this day. So if you are looking for a place that seems to have a hotbed of ghostly activity, the Stanley Hotel is for you. Book a room today……….”here’s Johnny”.

Ghosts in Christianity

March 2009
I understand some may think this is a harsh subject or that some may think it could be offensive. I assure you, this blog will not be some tirade against religion because in fact, I am a Christian. I am a Christian who believes in God, who believes in Jesus. I am fairly "new" to Christianity, but I like to think I'm slightly maturing. I am by NO means anywhere near a fully mature Christian, I'm barely even in the "maturing" stage. This blog will be supported primarily by facts and not just my own silly opinions. But I raised the question: Exactly what is the stance on ghosts in Christianity?

As Christians we believe that once we die, our souls are sent for judgment and that every person on this Earth will be judged once they pass away. Our souls are judged on whether or not we are "worthy" of entering the kingdom of Heaven. If we are not worthy, then we would be sent to Hell. As a matter of fact, according to Christian belief there is no room for the acceptance of ghosts residing on the Earth because there are only two ways to go. Catholics are essentially the only religion who have a firm belief in purgatory, which is a soul who is trapped somewhere between Heaven and Hell. But in the Bible, Paul writes: "To be absent from the body, is to be present with the Lord."

For this, it is basic Christian belief that ghosts do not exist. What exists on this Earth are demons, or fallen angels. It is believed that these demons are sent from Hell as a form of trickery of the Devil. These demons are used to influence the saved ones into going to the "dark" side. The only "ghost" that ever existed was the Holy Ghost, who is the all powerful. Some Christians believe that since a Holy Ghost exists, therefore angels exist. These angels are not souls trapped on Earth. They are sent to guide the saved brothers and sisters. Since there is a Holy Ghost, there is also the exact opposite, which I explained above.

In the bible it says that one third of the angels rebelled against God, led by Satan. Satan has sent these demons back to Earth to deceive us and to make us question our belief in God. He sends them back to make us believe they are the "ghosts" of people who have died. In 2 Corinthians 11:14 it says: "And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. (15) Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works." Basically saying that Satan's demons can manipulate themselves to appear as angels or "helpful spirits".

Does Jesus ever mention Ghosts? Well in Luke 24:39 it says: "Touch me and make sure that i am not a ghost, because ghosts don't have bodies, as you see that I do!" But this isn't Jesus telling us ghosts are real, only saying that HE is real and not like the ghosts of the old fables.

The bible does forbid contacting the dead through things like seances (or things like Ouija Boards). It is said here in Deuteronomy 18:9 "When thou art come into the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee, thou shalt not learn to do after the abominations of those nations. (10) There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch. (11) Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer. (12) For all that do these things are an abomination unto the LORD: and because of these abominations the LORD thy God doth drive them out from before thee."So it is actually considered an abomination to physically try to conjure a ghost.

Now "believing" in ghosts is NOT a sin. Believing in ghosts as a Christian however, makes people question your true faith in God. Because it said in the bible that a day will come where judgment will be passed on everyone at one time and either you go to Heaven or go to Hell. There is no in between. Does believing make you a bad Christian? No. Does it make you an incomplete Christian? Maybe. Truth of the matter is, a good 33% of American Christians believe in ghosts as well all know them. That number is staggering considering the belief. I am one of those Christians who believes in ghosts. I do NOT oppose God or Jesus. I do NOT deliberately try to summon "spirits" to enter my body, or communicate through me. What I do, is walk around a creepy old building and snap pictures and turn on an audio recording device. I may ask a few questions for the spirit to answer, but I am by NO means summoning spirits to enter my thoughts.

You see most Christians 100% believe in God and believe in Heaven and Hell. As humans, we have adapted several times over several hundred years. Our practices and beliefs change according to how life is currently. At one point people used the Bible to defend racism and slavery. But we have adapted and realized that is not what the Bible was saying. People use it now to defend anti-gay beliefs (which I won't go into). God clearly states the most important commandment is to "love God and to love People". We as a human race may sometimes twist the words of the bible to promote hatred towards people (and it's only the bad Christians we ever see, which manipulates the minds of every non believer sadly).

I guess my point is, is that all true Christians love God with all their heart. And most of us try our hardest to "love thy neighbor as one would love thine own self". There are NUMEROUS theological arguments that Christians are torn between. Ghosts being one of them. But the important thing is this: only one person passes true judgment on us, and that is God. It is based off our true hearts. It is based off if we really are trying to spread God's love towards other people. It is about the person we are in Christ, the person we have matured into. So does simply believing in ghosts make you a bad Christian? No. Will you go to Hell if you believe in ghosts? I don't think so, but it's not up to me to pass any judgment. You are not even going to Hell if you are gay. The only person who decides who goes enters Heaven is God. It is my advice, if you are a Christian, to not meddle deeply into the paranormal. Do not thrust yourself into a world where you CAN be corrupted. There ARE demons out there, and do not involve yourselves with them. But do ghosts exist? In my opinion yes. I personally do not see the harm in trying to document and prove their existence. Why they are here? I have NO idea. I will never know.

I am not here trying to defend myself for my belief in the paranormal. But listen, I am not perfect. No Christian will ever be perfect. I can admit that. I don't believe that I am sinning by taking pictures in an old hotel. I don't believe I'm sinning for taking an interest in something a bit abnormal. Again, this is just ME speaking. Please don't attack me, I have attacked no one in this blog. As a matter of fact, I believe I have posed by sides of the story here, equally and fairly. In fact, I think I have defended the non ghost believer more than a Christian like me. I just wanted to write this blog just to shed even a minuscule light on the subject. I am NOT an expert. I have only been a Christian for a little over a year, I by no means have a lot of answers. I'm a newbie of sorts, but I just wanted to post some facts. A lot of this was facts I got from other websites, and from the bible itself. Take this blog in anyway you want, but it was not an attack on anyone's faith. I LOVE God, and I do my best to love on people. I assure you there is no more of a true statement you will ever hear from me.

My Crazy Palm Reading

March 2009
I always felt that the bond between a mother and a child is a strong one. You spend at least nine months growing and developing in the comfort of her belly. After you are born the bond grows stronger. Is there possibly a spiritual bond as well? I think there is and have experienced that very strong connection. When I was in elementary and middle school, my Mother worked part time for a daycare center. We never knew which days she would be there in the morning on a school day. Typically the mornings consist of my Mother saying, "it's time to get up". I would also answer "ok", then carry my sleepy butt to the couch and usually spend 20 minutes trying to wake up. One of morning everything started out the same with her yelling for me to get up and me shouting out “ok”. What made this morning different from the others, she wasn't even there. I was surprised and taken back by the fact that her rousting me out of bed was so clear. That was a weird morning that I will never forget. Was it my Mother’s strong spirit willing me to get up or was it just the reputation of hearing the same thing over and over again?

This brings me to my crazy palm reading. I have only had my palm read twice in my lifetime. The first time was so long ago that I can't remember if what she predicted came true. The second time was just last year at the end of April. My friend thought that it might be fun to get our palms read to see if our futures would be promising. I have been laid off work for a month by then and was hoping that a new job was in my immediate future. All I could afford was the five dollar special which consisted of a 10 minute read. I went in the tiny little room where she asked a couple of generic questions. I put my hand in her hand with the palms up and she began the reading. She started by telling me that I will be changing jobs and doing something different sometime in the next three months. I didn't tell her that I was unemployed but that read sounded promising. Then she told me that I would be under lots stress from my job and would cause some health issues. Hum, what job? After that, she tells me that in the summertime, I will get some big news, possibly about having a baby. I know that I look young but considering that my baby was 21 years old at the time, I thought she was nuts. There was no way in hell I was going to have another baby! I told my friend what she said and was glad that I only spent five dollars for that crazy palm reading. Actually, less than a month later everything she said that would happen to me happened to my daughter instead. In May she had panic attacks brought on by the stress she was experiencing at work. After getting another job, her panic attacks went away and she seemed to be feeling better. As for that summer prediction, she got pregnant in August when her boyfriend paid her a visit. It seemed as if she was reading my daughter's future while looking at my palm. Perhaps there is something to that strong Mother/Child bond? I just wanted to share this story with all of you.

Hughes Looks Good Against Jeter, Team USA

March 2009
I thought Phil Hughes looked pretty sharp against Jeter and Team USA today.

He still has some work to do, obviously, but I like some of the stuff I have seen so far this Spring.

Here is a little bit of live blogging of Phil's outing from Pete Abe:

UPDATE, 1:11 p.m.: Just a hunch, but I bet Phil Hughes pitches really well today. (Nice call, Pete!)

UPDATE, 1:18 p.m.: Hughes gave up a bleeder single by Pedroia. Then he got the shortstop to ground into a double play. That guy stinks.

UPDATE, 1:26 p.m.: That gritty, gutty Brett Gardner singled, went to third on a single by Tex and scored on a single by Posada. Then Nady went 1-6-3 to end the inning. 1-0 Yankees.

UPDATE, 1:34 p.m.: Hey, look, it’s Phil Hughes. Fanned Wright looking with a cutter. Fanned Dunn looking at a filthy curve. Got Youkilis to fly to right.

25 pitches, 16 strikes. He could go back out there if they want. He’s got 10-15 more in him.

UPDATE, 1:39 p.m.: Great play by Pedroia ranging deep behind second and making a strong throw to get Cash. If Cano had half as much giddy-up, he’d be an All-Star. … Meanwhile, Hughes is back out there.

UPDATE, 1:45 p.m.: For the third time in three games, Hughes had hit a batter with an 0-1 pitch. He has been told to bust every hitter inside when he gets to that count. He barely brushed Granderson’s jesey.

It costs him as Jeter gets up and delivers a two-run single. 2-1 USA.

UPDATE, 1:54 p.m.: Hughes’ line: 2.2 3 2 2 0 2. 41 pitches / 25 strikes.

Paranormal Shows: Believe It or Not?

March 2009
Many of the paranormal shows on TV have huge followings. Each week we tune in to watch paranormal investigations in haunted places, or on the hunt for elusive creatures in places we may never travel to. We are spooked by their personal experiences and amazed by the evidence of paranormal phenomenon that they capture on their scientific equipment. Some of the shows are met by criticism of being untrue and fooling the public into believing the paranormal crap they are serving up. Most hardcore paranormal enthusiast won’t listen to the skeptics and ignore their ranting. I have listed seven well known paranormal shows and ask you to give your opinion if you believe the show is real or not.

Ghost Hunters: This Sci-fi show follows the investigations of The Atlantic Paranormal Society (TAPS) headed up by Jason Hawes and Grant Wilson, who are plumbers by trade. Each week they lead their team of paranormal researchers to investigate various haunted places throughout the country. They are equipped with sophisticated electrical devices to aide them in the investigations. They set out to prove that there is a logical known reason for the unusual paranormal activities. They thoroughly investigate the areas where the apparitions, noises, and objects moving by unseen forces have been reported. There are times they are able to “debunk” the activities and give another possible answer for the cause. There are those few times when they catch something so incredible and chilling that it even seems to surprise them. They will not say a place is haunted unless they have enough evidence to back it up.

Ghost Hunters International: This spin-off of the original Sci-fi show takes the investigations to paranormal hotspots around the world. The GHI team is lead by veteran investigator, Robb Demarest. He along with Barry Fitzgerald is enjoying their second season of investigating with a whole new team. Here’s hoping that this group stays together. They basically follow the same guidelines as the original Ghost Hunters team, TAPS. Using the same electrical equipment, with the additions of a full-spectrum camera and 360 mic, they do the same type of debunking methods that the TAPS team uses. After checking all the evidence and don’t find anything paranormal, they will not say the place is haunted. However, they do seem to capture lots of paranormal anomaly in the devices they use in some of those spooky international places they have investigated.

Destination Truth: This Sci-fi show follows Josh Gates and his crew investigating and searching for the truth of mythical creatures and other paranormal activities throughout the world. Also using the same guidelines as TAPS, they are armed with scientific equipment and the knowledge to either debunk or find evidence of the phenomenon. They will talk to the locals who may be witnesses of the creatures or paranormal activities and experts as well. Then at nightfall, they set up their equipment and conduct the investigation, sometimes putting them in danger. Afterwards, they take all the evidence they captured to experts in Los Angeles for evaluation.

Ghost Adventures: This Travel Channel show came about from an incredible documentary of ghostly evidence captured. You follow three paranormal investigators, Zak, Nick and Aaron to any haunted location throughout this country and internationally. They start out by getting to know more about the areas surround the place they plan to investigate. Then they will talk to the locals for personal experiences or stories they may have heard. Their method of investigating is very different from TAPS, GHI and DT. Only the three of them are present during the investigations, no camera and sound crews, and they are locked in the facility from dusk to dawn, with no way out. They will set up equipment in various spots where paranormal activity was reported and use their handhelds for most of the investigation. If anything is caught on camera or a recorder, we see that evidence right afterwards. Ghost Hunters and GHI usually presents their evidence at the end of the investigation. Also, both Zak and Nick use a taunting method to stir up the ghosts, hoping to anger them into making an appearance. Sometimes this seems to work even though the screaming gets to be too much. Zak was warned by a Priest not to taunt the demon spirits because it could be dangerous but we know he won’t stop.

Most Haunted: This UK team mostly investigates international hotspots but has made an appearance in the United States. The UK team is lead by Yvette Fielding and is made up of psychics, mediums, a skeptic and other experts in the paranormal field. We are first told of all the paranormal activity by Yvette, and then another team member, Leslie, takes us room by room giving the haunts and history of the place. She watches while Yvette and Brian Shepherd, a medium/psychic artist, go through the same rooms to see if he can pick up the information that was given earlier. He is usually right on the money with his answers. Then its lights out, they separate into several groups and start the investigation. Like Ghost Adventures, we see any evidence captured right after it happens. Sometimes they will conduct a séance to communicate with the dead. This group is out to prove that there is life after death. After the investigation is over, the evidence is gone over piece by piece an analyzed by Ciar O’Keeffe, a Parapsychologist and skeptic, to see if they caught anything paranormal.

Paranormal State: Another show, found on A&E, that I haven’t watched and would like input. This is how the show is described on the website: This show delves deep into the strange and the mysterious with Paranormal Research Society founder Ryan Buell and his team of investigators as they attempt to unravel inexplicable paranormal phenomena including sixth-sense experiences, ghost sightings, demonic disturbances, and brushes with the darkest areas of the unknown. They work cases all across the country.

Psychic Kids: Children of the Paranormal: This is another A&E show that each week follows children that are brought together to learn how to deal with their special psychic skills and to let them know that they are not alone. Dr. Lisa Miller and Chip Coffey are helping them find that understanding along with their parents. You follow each child’s story and find that they are usually scared and isolated, keeping quiet about what is happening to them. You hear their parent’s stories of fear for their child not really understanding if their kid is making up stories or if something is mentally wrong with their child. They are taught how to manage their abilities and shown all the burdens that come with having paranormals skills. The journey between each child, their parents, the medium and psychologist takes a unique and personal path on how they deal with their special gifts.
