The Buddhist Temple Execution

terror

There have been many bizarre murders in and around the City of Phoenix, but the killing of six Buddhist monks was extremely shocking. Even though the killings were horrible, it was the manner to which they were murdered that was the most appalling. On Saturday, August 10, 1991, during the scorching summer, nine people, which included six Buddhist monks, a nun and two acolytes, were found shot to death at the Wat Promkunaram Buddhist temple in the far west area of Phoenix. A temple member found the bodies lying side by side in what appeared to be an execution-style killing. The homicides were label the largest mass slaying in Maricopa County’s history.

Among the fatalities was a 71 year old num, Foy Sripanpiaserf, who was the grandmother of the youngest murder victim, Matthew Miller. Miller was 16 years old, a novice monk, and a high school student. Some of the other victims included a high priest and a 21 year old acolyte. Authorities said that there were no signs of struggle or resistance. Only two small rooms appeared to have been disheveled with the temple area and main rooms looking as if they were untouched, leaving no motive for the murders.

This is what the investigators found upon arrival of the crime scene: The bodies of all nine victims were found in the living room near a couch and still dressed in their saffron robes. The carpet underneath the bodies and their clothing was saturated in blood. They were arranged in a circular pattern and lying face down. They were all shot in the back of the head at close range, some at least three times. Their fingers were laced together behind their necks and from the way the bodies fell, it looked like they were praying and gave no resistance.

To get some sort of clues about who would commit such a heinous act of violence, they found some strange evidence in and around the crime scene. In the middle of the bodies was an ashtray filled with remains of a fire that appeared to be put out with a couple of extinguishers. The monks didn’t smoke so they figured that this act was just done out of shear sick pleasure. A pile of keys was found on a table, the word “bloods” was carved in a wall, shell casings from a 20-gauge shotgun, as well as more casings from other types of shot guns. They figured the keys were probably used to locate a safe and with more than one type of casing found at the crime scene, it would appear that more than one person enacted the killings.

Who would carry out this extremely violent crime on a group of monks in their temple while they were praying? On August 20th, during a standard traffic stop, the Luke Air Force Base officer noticed a rifle lying on the passenger side of a car driven by 17 year old Rolando Caratachea. Behind Caratachea’s car was another driven by 16 year old Jonathan Doody, who was of Thai descent, and was also pulled over for “suspicious activity.” The boys were stopped the next day but this time they were together in the same car. The officer inquired where the rifle was at and Caratachea said that it was in his car parked at Doody’s house. They found the rifle somewhat hidden and by law had to report it to the sheriff deputy. The boys were found to have no record so the rifle was returned back to them.

It would be a month later that the Office of Special Investigations heard about the incident and check police records and issued a warrant to take hold of the rifle. No assessment was done on the rifle right away. Instead it was put in evidence with about 80 other rifles that were also confiscated for testing. It wouldn’t be until October 24th when investigators got a break in the case. The weapon that was retrieved from Caratachea’s car, .22 caliber semiautomatic Marlin rifle, proved to be a match with the bullet casings found in the temple. Upon further examination of the place, they found a 20-gauge Stevens shotgun which match the casings, presenting the investigators both weapons. The search also turned up two knives, a camouflage hat, two facemasks, and gloves leading them to believe that the motive was robbery. Another theory for the murders was that it could have been some sick desire to play war that the boys decided to carry out.

In typical fashion, they made different statements about the killing, each saying that it was the other guy’s idea and they pulled the trigger, killing all nine victims. Doody acting all innocent said that it was a large gang he was with and was outside when all the shooting started. He didn’t know why they had all those weapons and thought there were at the temple as a “challenge” to beat the sensor alarm for the building. He went on to say that his family was in danger of being hurt by these men. A judge didn’t buy the stories and said that the boys would be tried as adults with the maximum penalty of death.

In 1993, Garcia decided to testify against Doody in exchange for a sentence of life in prison. Garcia pleaded guilty and explained the whole events of what happened on August 9, 1991. The intention was robbery because they heard rumors that the monks had a safe with lots of money, with guns, and cameras in their rooms. They figured that the monks would be an easy mark and wouldn’t put up a fight. They made a war game of it, wearing camouflage gear and carried assault rifles. They arrived at the temple around 10 and 10:30 pm, forcing them to kneel in a circle looking at each other, while they ransacked the place. Shortly afterwards, the nun came in and they had her to kneel down and be part of the group. For an hour they waited while the men vandalized the temple collecting over $2,500, cameras, and stereo equipment, but having no success discovering which key opened the safe. Garcia goes on to say that he wanted to go but it was Doody who didn’t want to leave anyone behind that can testify against them, and carved the word “Bloods” in the wall.

On July 12, 1993, Jonathan Doody was sentenced to 281 years in prison for his part in the murders. Garcia was sentenced to 271 which was the maximum punishment under the plea agreement. It was still unclear who actually pulled the trigger, but this senseless act of execution will still go down in Phoenix history as one of the largest mass murders to date. It makes you wonder if the spirits of these nine helpless people are still wandering around the Wat Promkunaram Buddhist Temple. I didn’t find any evidence of ghosts on the premises, but that doesn’t mean their spirits aren’t there.

April's Stories: Bloody Mary

terror
This was always one chant that I refused to do, it terrified me. Many were curious to try it and some had interesting results. April, her sister and friend were no exception. They wanted to see if this so-called urban legend was true. Her friend was religious and didn’t believe anything would happen but decided to join them anyway. It was daytime and they decided to do the chant in April’s bedroom. They put a blanket over the window but it just wasn’t dark enough. Since April loved to read, she had lots of books, so they used them to stack in front of the window to achieve enough darkness. They checked the stacks and were satisfied that the books were not going to move. They all got on the bottom bunk of April’s bed and covered themselves with another blanket. It was plenty dark at this time, so they began. Right after they were done, they heard a loud crashing noise that appeared to be coming from the room. This loud noise was followed by the sound of the blanket covering them tearing right behind her friend. The three of them threw off the blanket and saw all the books lying on the floor as if something tossed them there. That was enough for them and they ran though the house and out the front door. They stood in the yard sobbing, so afraid of what they just witnessed. Shortly afterwards, April’s mother came home. She was very worried to find the girls and their friend crying uncontrollably and was scared to find out what happened. After getting them to calm down, they explained about doing the Bloody Mary chant and what they experienced afterwards. She took them all to April’s bedroom to find the books scattered all over the floor. She then examined the blanket and found the rip that the girls heard, only it was four not just one. The slits looked as if someone forcibly torn the blanket with long sharp nails, causing four long holes. The girls were scared for months afterwards and their Mother was pissed that her old family blanket was damaged. I’m still not doing this chant!

The Boogeyman: The Haunting of Marla

terror
This story is about a friend of mine, Marla, and happened almost thirty years ago. As they say in Dragnet, “The story you are about to read is true, the names have been changed to protect the innocent.”

Marla, Deanna and I were best friends in high school and did just about everything together. It was our senior year homecoming game/dance and we decided to party before the game. My sister, Carly, was older and had her own apartment, and so we talked her into getting us some Boonesfarm wine to get a buzz on, or in Marla’s case, wasted. Marla never made it to the game. By the time we got to the school, there was grape wine all over the side of my car and Marla was passed out in the back. Deanna and I locked the car, left her sleeping it off, and then went to the game. When we got back, Marla was up and said that some creepy old man was watching her in the car. She said that she thought he looked transparent, but just chalked it up to the effects of too much booze. This was the first time she mentioned the old man, but it wouldn’t be the last.

After high school we all went to various local colleges while still living with our parents. Marla started having some health issues such as swelling in the legs and water weight gain. She began feeling extremely tired, weak and confused. Her parents took her to the doctor and after a battery of tests; they found out that one of her kidneys was failing. She started losing weight and had an awful taste in her mouth and was put on treatment right away. Marla was experiencing excruciating pain and was fitted with a small box of pain medicine that would release a dose every time the pain got unbearable. While she was going though this physical pain, the paranormal activity started.

Marla shared a back bedroom with her younger sister Sandy at her parents’ modest suburban home. It was her parents, sister and two brothers living there at the time with her. No one else in the house knew what she was experiencing because she was afraid to say anything. She figured they would tell her that it was the medication causing hallucinations, which she often questioned herself. She did feel comfortable enough to tell me. Her accounts caused the hairs on my neck to rise and chilled me to the bone. Marla hated to spend the night alone at her house, so she often stayed at mine. After hearing her daily and nightly occurrences, I didn’t blame her.

One evening, while the entire family was out and Marla was alone, she fixed a dinner and went to her bedroom to eat it. Marla often ate in her bedroom, a place she used to feel safe. Shortly after she finished her meal, she heard footsteps walking down the hall, and then stopping at her door. She shouted out to see who was there, but no one answered. Thinking that one of her brothers was playing a joke, she opened the door, looked down the hall, and saw no one. She walked around the house, looked outside, and noticed that all the cars were still gone. She went back to her room, shut the door, and lay on her bed to watch TV. Again, she heard footsteps walking towards her room and stopping at the door. Quickly, Marla ran to the door and opened it just to find an empty hallway. She started to get chills and told herself to get a grip; the meds are causing you to hear things. A short time later, Marla heard the pictures in the hallway being moved, like they were swinging back and forth. This lasted a few minutes, and then quickly stopped. Marla stayed frozen on her bed until her parents got home. Feeling safe, she lied down and fell asleep. Sometime in the middle of the night, she was woken up by a male voice calling her name and feeling his hot breath on her ear. She opened her eyes to see that no one else was in the room. Needless to say, she didn’t much sleep that night and many nights to come.

Marla constantly heard the unseen footsteps and a male voice calling her name at night and in the daytime as well. She could feel the hot breath on her ear and felt her hair move every time her name was whispered. She heard and saw other types of unexplained movement all around the house, especially down the hallway. One day, while she was home alone and in her room, she heard the footsteps again. This time was different because the footsteps were followed by the door opening, footsteps walking towards her on the bed, the feeling like someone sat on the edge of the bed, and an imprint of a person sitting there. Marla was paralyzed with fear and couldn’t move. This lasted on a few seconds but for her it was much longer. She knew now that it was time to tell her parents what has been happening. No one else in the house had any experiences of unknown happenings, just Marla. I honestly can’t remember what became of her telling her parents the whole story, all I know is that he, the old man, started making his presence known to Marla after that incident.

The old man, or as Marla called him, “the Boogeyman”, was seen not only in the house but other places outside the house as well. She described him as slightly transparent, thin, weathered, wearing a tattered jacket and hat. He never approached her, just seemed to be watching her every move. Even though he didn’t seem like he was going to harm her, his sudden appearance gave her chills. During the time Marla was seeing this old man, we decided to get an apartment together. She was feeling much better and her kidney survived the treatment and the pain was gone, but the old man was still there. Even though she saw him in our apartment, I never did. I occasionally felt like we were being watched and had that uneasy feeling. I'm sure that her constant conversations of the ghost man probably had my imagination running wild. I asked Marla if this old man could have been a family member watching over her while she got through her health crisis. Perhaps he was not meant to harm you but protect you. I was trying to spin a positive on this scary time in her life and try to figure out why this was happening. This made sense to her, so she had a talk with her father. She found out that the old man fit the description of his great grandfather. Months later, after we moved back to our parents' homes, the old man didn't make anymore appearances. Her health had much improved as well as other aspects of her life.

It has been years since I last saw Marla. I don’t know the present state of her health or if she ever had any more paranormal experiences and a visit from the Boogeyman. I know that this experience of hers will forever be imprinted in my memory.
"Be well and peace."

Trilogy of Terror

terror
Trilogy of Terror is a 1975 three part television horror thriller film. The film, which starred Karen Black in the four lead roles of each chapter, including roles as twin sisters, was originally a failed pilot for a horror anthology television series. All three segments are based on unrelated short stories, with film titles being the names for the film's main character, played by Black. The third one is my favorite, giving me chills down to my bone and the fear of Tiki dolls. I wrote about the first two but the third one deserves to be watched, especially if you haven’t seen it.
Segment 1: JulieChad and Eddie are university students who admire their English teacher, Julie Eldrich. During one class, Chad is distracted by Julie's low cut shirt and begins to daydream about her. Eddie discourages Chad against becoming romantically involved with teachers. Later that evening, when Julie is undressing alone in her room, Chad is seen watching through a window. The next day at university, Chad asks Julie out on a date, and after initially refusing, accepts Chad's offer. Basically, during the date, Chad spikes Julie’s drink, drives them to a motel, takes sexually provocative pictures of her and blackmails her into continuing their affair. After several weeks of being threatened, Julie announces "The game is over". Julie then asks Chad, "Did you really think that dull, little mind of yours could possibly have conceived any of the rather dramatic experiences we've shared? Why do you think you suddenly had the overwhelming desire to see what I looked like under 'all those clothes?' Don't feel bad, I always get bored after a while." Chad realises his own drink has been poisoned. Chad dies, and Julie drags his body into the darkroom where she sets fire to the offending photographs. Chad's death is later reported in local media as a house fire. Julie adds the newspaper story to a scrapbook containing students who met similar fates. Suddenly, there is a knock at the door, and another student in need of a tutor enters.

Segment 2: Millicent and ThereseA tale of two sisters, one being the prudish Millicent with curly brown hair and large glasses, and the easy going Therese with long blonde hair. Millicent is determined that Therese is evil, and plants a voodoo device to kill her. When Millicent's friend Dr. Ramsey enters the house, he finds Therese dead on her bedroom floor with the doll next to her. After speaking with the family doctor, Dr. Ramsey reveals that it was Millicent acting in a blonde wig and make-up in a dual personality manner.

Segment 3: Amelia

Urban Legend: When a Stranger Calls

terror
Many stories are handed down from generation to generation in the form a modern folklore or urban legends. Urban legends are stories that are spread in various forms that are usually false though believed to be real by those telling them. Some believe that they are based on real events making the tales even more twisted. The substance of these stories usually consists of humor or horror. Sometimes the stories are told around campfires or at slumber parties with the person telling the story holding a flashlight under their chin for visual effects. Many horror movies are based on urban legends of one sort of another. One of the stories circulating around is the one about the babysitter. The horror/thriller movie, "When a Stranger Calls", was based on this very story and scared many of us from babysitting other people's children. I saw the 1979 version of the movie in the theatre with my friends. I am the biggest chicken when it comes to watching horror flicks even though I still loved to watch them. In 1979 there were fewer theatres so waiting in long lines was typical so you wasn't sure which show time you would make. Most of the time I just hated it when a tall person sat in front of me except during a horror flick. But as luck or lack of luck would have it, we ended up in the second row and had a perfectly clear view of the screen. Now I had to depend on squinting my eyes or looking through the fence fingers during the intense scenes. The fence fingers are just my hand in front of my face with my fingers slightly apart enough for me to see the movie. The first part of the movie, which starred Carol Kane as the babysitter, was based on the babysitter urban legend. The story begins with Jill (Kane) at the home of a doctor and his wife watching their children. The children are upstairs sleeping when Jill's terror begins. She receives a phone call from a mysterious man asking her questions about what she is doing and asking “have you checked the children”? At first, she just dismisses the calls as a practical joke but the calls kept coming along with more frightening threats. She becomes so scared that she calls the police. They told her that she needed to keep him on the phone long enough so they can trace the call. Now watch the video and see what happens next.

Although this story has been told many times with different variations of what happen, the basic story is still the same. Some stories say that the babysitter hears heavy breathing with the killing telling her that he is coming to get her. The part where she calls the police, they trace the call and tell her to “get out” because the man is inside the house, is basically the same. The killer getting away and the children being dead are also told the same in this Urban Legend.

The movie, “When a Stranger Calls” goes beyond the Urban Legend letting us know what may have happened afterwards. (If you haven’t seen it then maybe you would not want to read on.) The middle of the movie is slow where we follow the killer, Curt, after he escapes from the asylum and the retired detective, Clifford, tracking him down. We now find Jill as an adult, married with children of her own. Curt just happens to find out where she was living from a newspaper article. Jill and Stephen, her husband, go out to dinner and get a babysitter to watch their two kids. Jill receives a call at the restaurant, answers it only to have the creepy voice of Curt on the other end asking, “Have you checked the children?” Jill freaks out; they call the police and head home to find everything just fine with the babysitter and the children. Later, we see Jill having trouble sleeping, as you can imagine, and in the kitchen getting milk when all of a sudden, the lights go out. She heads back to bed and hears what appears to be Curt’s chilling voice whispering to her from the closet where the door is ajar. She shakes her husband, trying to wake him up, but it was Curt that was in bed with her. He rips her nightgown, chases her around the room, trying to kill her. Officer Clifford shows up in time to shoot Curt and kill him. Jill’s husband was knocked out in the closet and still alive.

During the climax of this movie, I hid my eyes, my friend Mary grabbed my leg and dug her nails in, and my friend Deb’s popcorn, (whatever she had left) was all over the place. Oh my, we sure enjoyed that adrenalin rush. You can’t beat a good horror/thriller movie that has an intense ending. I have seen the more current version of this movie but did not care for it.

There are many urban legends out there; this is just one of them. Look for Mike and myself to blog about other urban legends that have movies made from them or the ones we just like to talk about.
