Jerome: The Hillside Ghost Town

ghosts

On highway 89A, between Sedona and Prescott, lays the hillside ghost town of Jerome, Arizona.  This quaint little town was built on Cleopatra Hill and founded in 1876.  As you drive up or down the narrow road which weaves around historic buildings, you feel like you stepped back in time.  Some of the buildings are homes and businesses renovated by the many artists who are residence of Jerome.  Other buildings are old historic hotels that are rumored to be haunted or decaying abandoned buildings which were not able to be salvaged.

Jerome was made up of many different characteristics of people, seeking riches from the mines below.  The international blend of people made life in Jerome thrilling and lively.  It began with three prospectors laying claim on the copper deposits they found.  They then sold out to a group that formed the United Verde Copper Company in 1883.  The mining camp consisted of wood and canvas cabin/shacks and was named after Eugene Jerome, who was the principal backer.  Only two years later, the company had to shut down because of the high cost of operations.  William A. Clark took over as the new owner and added a narrow gauge railroad to reduce freight costs.  By the 20th century, the United Verde was the largest producing copper mine in the Arizona Territory.  The canvas cabins no longer existed and replaced by brick and framed buildings.  Jerome had churches, schools, theatres, hotels, shops and a civil center making it a place where many wanted to live.  In 1912, James S. Douglas, started the Little Daisy Mine.  By 1916, Jerome had two mines that had an abundant amount of copper minerals, boasting billions of dollars in profit by investors and financers.
Jerome was hit with many fires but was always rebuilt.  In 1918, with several fires in the tunnels and dynamiting cracking the buildings and causing the ground to shift, the mines took an enormous beating.  The Little Daisy Mine shut down in 1938 and Phelps-Dodge took over the United Verde in 1935.  In 1953, with copper prices continuously rising and falling and the loss of profits, Jerome’s copper mines shut down for good.

In 1929 the population peaked at 15,000 and was down to about 50 souls living there by the late 50’s.  Today, this peaceful community is thriving thanks to the writers, artists, musicians, historians and families that call Jerome home.

Another Road Trip

Sharon and I have packed our bags and we are on another road trip.  We are helping with the cemetery crawl and will have stories, video and photos of the trip.  Join us and all the other crazy racers at the finish line to see who the winning team is.

What's Up Next for Me?

ghosts
Smells like a Hershey bar.
The last time I wrote a post was about the ugly mass on my face.  It turned out to be basal cell cancer.  The big “C” is a tough thing to hear you have, but if you are to get skin cancer, this is the one to get.  The basal cancer is confined to the area and doesn’t spread or attack your cells like the other types of skin cancer do.  Since this is on my face and near my nose, my doctor recommended a plastic surgeon.  I have an appointment on Friday for my consultation.  I also have another mass near my hairline and under the frames of my glasses.  I forgot to show my doctor this one because I frequently see it and it is out of sight, out of mind.  I will have the surgeon check it out and remove it as well.  I am nervous about the surgery, but just want the cancer off my face.  I will see if he can remove the bags under my eyes while he at it, lol.  I will update everyone after I talk with the doc.

On a good note, Sharon and I are taking another trip.  We wish ya’ll (I sound like my sis, lol) could come with us.  We are helping with the cemetery crawl that our friend Debe Branning puts on every year.  I haven’t done this before but have expressed interest in doing so.  We get to wait at the contestants’ first cemetery stop and make sure they find the right headstone.  After they all check in, we get to head off to Holbrook where we will be spending the night in a teepee.  Hey, if it is good enough for Oprah, it is good enough for us.  Besides, I hear there are ghost roaming around those teepees and in the city of Holbrook.  I hope they are up for making an appearance.  That would be fantastic.  The next day, we have another cemetery to wait at and then it is off to the finish line.  We plan to take lots of pictures and photos of the race and any other places we see along the way.  Look for my “Route 66” giveaway.  I will be shopping along the way to buy fun things to giveaway to all my fab followers.
At the end of April is my hubby and mine’s 30th wedding anniversary.  We decided to take a 3 day, 3 night trip to Sedona and stay at a cottage near the river that flows through Oak Creek Canyon.  We plan to spend a day in Jerome, a night on a UFO tour, another day checking out petroglyphs and Native American ruins, shopping, and sightseeing at all the other places that this unique city has to offer.  I will be taking tons of pictures and posting about our experiences (not all the experiences, teehee).

May is going to be a big month too.  Not only is our first born grandchild going to be two, but we will be grandparents again.  My son and his wife are expecting a baby on May 6th.  Along with my family getting larger, Sharon and I have a couple of trips planned too.

I can’t wait…..

Where Do These Get Started?

ghosts

Occasionally I will pull up an old post for those who were not following me when it was originally posted. This one I wrote almost two years ago about crazy stories and rumors that people believe to be true.

There has been so many folklore or urban legends that have been spread around from person to person, and from generation to generation. What about those stories told about death, murder, and ghosts in movies that a supposed to be real, and subliminal messages in certain songs? There are movies like “The Haunting in Connecticut” or “Amityville Horror” that are supposed to be based on true stories and proven to be hoaxes, but there are other types of folklore that have been spread around as well. These stories happened behind the scenes or during filming of a movie, or while recording a song. Some of these stories are told of subliminal messages hidden in songs and can be heard if the song is played backwards. These stories end up bigger than anyone expected causing controversy and even spreading like wildfires. Who starts these rumors and how do they get out of hand? Here are just a few examples:

Urban legends:
Let’s start with the biggest stories or rumors told, an urban legend. An urban legend is a form of modern folklore consisting of stories thought to be factual by those circulating them. The term is often used to mean something related to an "apocryphal story." Like all folklore, urban legends are not necessarily false, but they are often distorted, exaggerated, or sensationalized over time. Urban legends are sometimes repeated in news stories and, in recent years, distributed by e-mail. People frequently allege that such tales happened to a "friend of a friend" so often, in fact, that "friend of a friend," has become a commonly used term when recounting this type of story. There are many people that believe these stories to be true, even to this day.

The Blair Witch Project:
This was a low-budget American horror film released in 1999. The story is depicted as a documentary pieced together from amateur footage. The film tells the story of three young student filmmakers (Heather Donahue, Joshua Leonard, and Michael C. Williams) who are believed to have gone into the Black Hills of Burkittsville, Maryland to film a documentary about a local legend known as the Blair Witch. The three students never came back. The spectator is told that neither the students nor their bodies were ever found, although their video and sound equipment (along with most of the footage they shot) were discovered a year later. So many people believed this to be a true story that many inundated Brukittsville in search of the three students and the legendary Blair Witch. It was found out later, after the movie made millions of dollars, which it was not a true documentary but a mockumentary instead.

Three Men and a Baby:
This one was a huge story that even hit the news media and other entertainment shows and got way out of hand. In the scene where Jack Holden's mother visits the house and is playing with the baby, you can see in the window there's a human figure in a top hat, appearing to be hiding partially behind the curtain. Supposedly the legend states that the human figure was the ghost of a boy that had shot himself and died in the house, but that turned out not to be true. The figure was a prop left by accident on set, of a stand up cardboard cutout of Jack used for a commercial. You see it again later in the film, as Jack stands right next to it. I still have the newspaper article, from the Phoenix local paper, of the story, tucked away in my VCR copy of the movie.

The Wizard of Oz:
This was another story shown over and over on the news. Directly after the Tin Man scene, as they skip toward Oz and singing "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" song, unexpected movements are seen in the forest background. Rumor has it that a munchkin or stage hand suffered from depression, rumored to be because of a romance that went bad, and hung himself in the back drop. In reality, there were many birds put into the scene to give it a taste of reality, and the unexplained movements were caused by a crane's spread wings. In another rumor, it was told that a large number of eerie harmonies can be heard when playing the movie alongside Pink Floyd’s "Dark Side of the Moon" album.

Ohio Players "Love Rollercoaster":
In the background, during a music portion of the song, a scream can be heard. This scream was supposedly a terrified or torturous scream where rumors had it was the murder of a woman caught on the recording. Some have said that it was the album "Honey's" cover model, and caused by the manager. Others state it was an anonymous murder in the next room. The truth was that the guitar soloist made a screaming noise on his guitar. The band agreed to a vow of silence, due to the fact that the urban legend boosted the record sales.

Backmasking/subliminal messages:
(Taken from Wikipedia) Many songs, especially those from the 1960’s and 1970’s, have been rumored to have hidden messages done with backmasking. Backmasking (also known as backward masking) is a recording technique in which a sound or message is recorded backward onto a track that is meant to be played forward. Backmasking is a deliberate process, whereas a message found through phonetic reversal may be unintentional. Backmasking was popularized by The Beatles, who used backward vocals and instrumentation on their 1966 album Revolver. Artists have since used backmasking for artistic, comedic, and satiric effect, on both analog and digital recordings. The technique has also been used to censor words or phrases for "clean" releases of songs. There are rumors that the Beatles were involved in the spread of backmasking both as a recording technique and as the center of a controversy. This all came about in 1969, when WKNR-FM DJ Russ Gibb received a phone call from a student at Eastern Michigan University who identified himself as "Tom". The caller asked Gibb about a rumor that Beatle Paul McCartney had died, and claimed that the Beatles song "Revolution 9" contained a backward message confirming the rumor. Gibb played the song backwards on his turntable, and heard "Turn me on, dead man … turn me on, dead man … turn me on, dead man". Gibb began telling his listeners about what he called "The Great Cover-up", and to the original clue were added various others, including the alleged backmasked message "Paul is a dead man, miss him, miss him, miss him", in "I'm So Tired". The "Paul is dead" rumor popularized the idea of backmasking in popular music. Following Gibb's show, many more songs were found to contain audible phrases when reversed. Initially, the search was done mostly by fans of rock music, but in the late 1970s, during the rise of the Christian right in the United States, fundamentalist Christian groups began to claim that backmasked messages could bypass the conscious mind and reach the subconscious, where they would be unknowingly accepted by the listener. In 1981, Christian DJ Michael Mills began stating on Christian radio programs that Led Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven" contained hidden messages that were heard by the subconscious. In early 1982, the Praise the Lord Network's Paul Crouch hosted a show with self-described neuroscientist William Yarroll, who argued that rock stars were cooperating with the Church of Satan to place hidden subliminal messages on records. Also in 1982, fundamentalist Christian pastor Gary Greenwald held public lectures on dangers of backmasking, along with at least one mass record-smashing. During the same year, thirty North Carolina teenagers, led by their pastor, claimed that singers had been possessed by Satan, who used their voices to create backward messages, and held a record-burning at their church. Allegations of demonic backmasking were also made by social psychologists, parents, and critics of rock music, as well as the Parents Music Resource Center (formed in 1985), which accused Led Zeppelin of using backmasking to promote Satanism. On the April 28, 1982 edition of the CBS Evening News, Dan Rather discussed the finding of possible backmasked messages, and played reversed sections of songs by Led Zeppelin, Electric Light Orchestra and Styx.

These are only a few of the stories of movie ghosts, or haunting screams, and even subliminal messages found when songs are played backwards. Some of the movies and songs even made a hefty profit when the rumors came out. It just makes you wonder who really starts those crazy stories.

Was That A Ghost?

My good friend Sharon Day (Autumnforest, Ghost Hunting Theories) has written a book called, "Was That a Ghost?".  Through her many years of helping others and collecting information, she shares her techniques and experiences with us in understanding that puzzling question, was that a ghost I saw or something else.  Her book is now available for purchase on Kindle and Nook for $2.99.  Here is a description of what the book is about:

You see a dark shadow in your bedroom, hear a voice whispering in your ear, get a sudden chill with goosebumps and wonder, was that a ghost? As she does on her popular blog, “Ghost Hunting Theories,” Sharon Day will take you through quizzes, descriptions and real-life examples to help you understand your experience. She will introduce you to her technique; the “Trinity of Relevance” to learn if you had a haunting encounter or not. When you are done with Was That a Ghost?, you will not only know if you have encountered the world of the paranormal, but you will also have skills and knowledge you can apply to future events. It is the goal of this book to give the reader life skills that enhance understanding of the paranormal. Prescott: Where Was Abby?

ghosts

If someone were to ask me where I would like to be living, I would pick Prescott, Arizona. Prescott has that small town feel, but isn’t small. The downtown area around the Court House and the famous Whiskey Row has the old historical buildings and hotels along with small hometown shops and antique stores. There are many bungalows and cottages with historical plaques on them which line the many streets around town. It has the old town look and quaintness, but it still has all the amenities needed that a big city provides. I would never go bored hunting down all the places around town that are haunted and have great story about their ghosts. Oh yeah, the weather is nice too; not as hot as Phoenix or cold as Flagstaff….. just right.

Sharon and I picked Prescott as the place where we wanted to spend the night after visiting a couple of cemeteries and Vulture Mine. She booked room 16 which is known as Abby’s room and to be haunted. The story goes that Abby’s, who was ill, and her cat (Noble), starved to death in that room waiting for her husband to return with medicine. Sharon had an interesting experience in that room the last time she stayed there and couldn’t wait to give it another try. She brought Dale along to see if his presence would entice Abby to come out and play.

We settled in the room and went downstairs to read others experiences while staying in room 16, and then went out to eat. We left Dale on the floor by the closet door to guard it and make sure it stayed shut. That door has been known to open on its own. It’s weird, but the look on his face looked as if it went from happy to scare. That freaked me out.

When we got back to the room, Dale was still sitting by the closet door and appeared to not have moved. After messing around on our computers, we got the room ready for what we hoped would be a ghostly night. I never felt Abby’s presence in the room, but there was a distinct odor of a cat in the closet. Late in the night I felt something lightly walking on the covers. Many of the stories in the book also mentioned the feeling of a phantom cat walking on the bed while they were trying to sleep.

In the morning we checked all the objects we fixed to trap any ghosts that might move something, but none of it looked to be tampered with. We only experienced noises in the closet which sounded like scratching and meowing. Was poor Noble’s spirit still trapped in the closet?

We may not have experienced Abby’s paranormal activity, but we did get to see it snow. That may not sound too exciting for those who experience snowing all the time, but for us Phoenicians, it was a treat. Sharon was a bit worried about the roads being icy, but it quit before we left and the roads were clear.

Vulture Mine: Part Two

ghosts

After a short hike to get up the hill where the Ball Mill is located, we were very glad that it was January and not July. The weather was just perfect, cool and sunny. Off in the distance, we could see the mine and the rest of the buildings amongst the desert backdrop. The first little building we saw looked like it was the jail but actually it stored cyanide and that is why it had bars. We couldn’t find the entrance and moved on to the large building which was the Ball Mill. Most of the walls in this place had been missing but offering a fantastic view of the desert between the open areas of the building. Behind the mill stood a large metal building which housed the power plant as well as the machine shop. This place was amazing and a photographers dream. There were many old machines still sitting in the building, some of which powered the mines in its heyday.

After spending some time up on the hill, we took a nice hike back to where the Assay Office stood. As we reached the end of the path near the buildings, we saw where the “Hanging Tree” stood. From this huge Ironwood tree, 18 men were hung for stealing gold. Many have reported seeing shadow figures and hearing voices near the tree.  I was told by a friend that the stories about the hanging tree were not true and made up by a bunch of men in a bar to attract tourists.  I can believe that, lol.

We finally reached the beginning at the Vultures Roost and were met by Marty. He was charming and we couldn’t help asking him what he thought of Zak, Nick and Aaron. He liked Aaron, said that Nick was somewhat quiet, but couldn’t understand why Zak kept primping in the mirror and making sure his hair looked camera ready, lol. He did enjoy taking them around the place and telling them about the violent history and ghost sightings of Vulture Mine. We sat my camera on the tripod while Marty and I got it ready for the timer. We ran over to Sharon and got in place. I didn’t notice the weird and unexplained phenomena free floating in the picture until we got in the car and was on our way to Prescott.

On the way out and near the entrance is the Vulture Mine gate house.  The place was closed, so I just took pictures.  Next to that building was a dilapidated restroom.   The walls were being held up by wood planks; the roof looked like it was going to drop; the toilet and sink were broken and lying on the floor.

I have to say that I was very excited to visit Vulture Mine because of its rough history, cool abandoned buildings, and reports of ghostly activity. This place did not disappoint us and we are ready to make a return visit.
