top three baseball cap until 2011

May 2011
Public Service Announcement: Ahhh baseball cap. At one point, the baseball cap was used only by the players of its functionality. For example, for all professional baseball games played in the afternoon, the sun visors and grew steadily in the first decades of the 20th century. But today, the baseball cap has evolved to the point that they are not only used by ball players. Today they are worn by celebrities, presidents, adolescents and truckers alike. Today is the first hat of the American people need. Power to the People! In view of this, let's take a look at 10 tops the best baseball of all time. Are we going? Course will:

top three baseball cap until 2011 :

1. Montreal Expos
There was a time when there were two dozen baseball caps in my repertoire. Now, I have only two. I have only my trusty Red Sox hat and I have only the Montreal Expos hat. Le bleu-blanc-rouge et. Le Tricolore. Simply a classic.

 2. Baltimore Orioles
I know it's a bit cheesy. I know it's a little joke. I do not care. I love it. The new Orioles hat is too damn damn serious. This hat belongs to a book by John James Audubon not ballplayers in the head. Of course, not mine.

3. Homestead Gray
Now that's a cover bseball. Smells like baseball. Oozes baseball. most storied franchises in the Negro Baseball League. Most gloried franchise. What is the story, Morning Glory? The Homestead Grays, bitch! If this limit was good enough for Josh Gibson, Buck Leonard and Cool Papa Bell, is good enough for me!

...that is..top three baseball cap until 2011...

One of the great things about fantasy baseball

May 2011
One of the great things about fantasy baseball is the fact you can find information that backs just about any theory. It's great for those second, third, fourth and 21st opinions that the best fantasy players try to get every season, as they debate just how fast to go for that stud closer or catcher in the early rounds. And it's never too early to begin studying. If you don't have much time, this is a great place to stop.

About.com Baseball has its own fantasy expert in Kevin Kleps, who is in his third season poring through the stats to determine his (and your) path to domination in 2011.
Make sure you know the exact format your league is using, because it will affect the way you should prepare. Some players who are highly ranked in a rotisserie-style format are worth a lot less in a points format.
On to the 2011 player rankings:
Top 100 overall: Some very big names are in new places, a stud first baseman is attempting to come back from a devastating concussion, there is a Fantastic Four in Philadelphia -- and there is a familiar name at the top.
Ranking the starting pitchers: Fourteen pitchers won at least 17 games last season. Thirty-three players had 14 wins or more, and 48 had at least 13 victories. Here's our look at the top 80 for 2011.
Ranking the relief pitchers: If you ever want to start a run on a position in a fantasy baseball draft, take a closer in the sixth or seventh round. That's because there's more uncertainty than usual among relievers, especially after Rafael Soriano's move to New York.
Ranking the catchers: Joe Mauer has the huge contract and the reputation as the slam-dunk, no-doubt-about-it top catcher in fantasy baseball. But there's a Giant nipping at his heels.
Ranking the first basemen: This position begins with three of the best players in fantasy, followed by Adrian Gonzalez, who should be better than ever after being traded from pitcher-friendly Petco Park to Fenway Park and the Red Sox's loaded lineup.
Ranking the second basemen: At first glance, the crop would seem to include one hammer in Robinson Cano, three studs coming off injury-interrupted years and the enigmatic Brandon Phillips, who had a down year after three very productive ones. But it's a deeper group than you might think.

Ranking the third basemen: Boston's big trade for Gonzalez has an added fantasy benefit. It makes one of the best fantasy hitters -- Kevin Youkikis -- suddenly eligible at a difficult position to fill. Where does he fit in?
Ranking the shortstops: Jimmy Rollins, Derek Jeter and Jose Reyes aren't as great as they used to be, but they're still among the top five shortstops. That makes this position a make-or-break proposition.
Ranking the outfielders: This is the fantasy baseball position at which you will find the most talent -- along with the guys who will drive you the craziest (see Upton, B.J., and Granderson, Curtis).
Ranking the designated hitters: There are a few decent options, but you might want to focus elsewhere. It depends on who's available among these aging (and/or fielding-challenged) players.

A Steady Stream: Probables for May 5th, 2011

May 2011
A Steady Stream will be a semi-regular column that looks at probable pitchers starting games tomorrow and owned in approximately less than 50% of all ESPN and/or Yahoo! leagues that could be "stream-worthy" if they are available in your league.

Here are my "stream-worthy" pitchers for games to be played on a shortened schedule for Thursday, May 5th, 2011:
  • Colby Lewis, TEX (50% ESPN; 54% Yahoo!) @ Jason Vargas, SEA (0.1% E; 3%Y!) - Both pitchers are streaming options in this game. Lewis finally got things going in 2011 with an eight inning, six hit, one walk, six strikeout effort win against the A's his last time out and looked strong, too. He's 0-3 in five career starts with a 3.82 ERA and 30 strikeouts in 30.2 innings pitched at SAFECO. Vargas hasn't faired well at home this season, going 0-2 in four starts with a 6.86 ERA in 21 innings pitched. VERDICT: Stream Lewis
  • Brandon Beachy, ATL (49.7% E; 36% Y!) vs Shaun Marcum, MIL - In 36.1 innings, Beachy is just 1-1 but has recorded a quality start in each of his last three starts. His 36:10 K:BB ratio is the real deal as is his 8.92 K/9 ratio. His 3.47 ERA and 0.99 WHIP make him not only streamable but ownable. This is Milwaukee's second look at him and Marcum (3-1, 2.21 ERA, 1.06 WHIP) is a tough match up but a pitcher putting up number like Beachy deserves to be run out there every fifth day until he proves otherwise. VERDICT: Stream/Own Beachy
  • John Lackey, BOS (35.1% E; 45% Y!) vs Joel Pineiro, LAA (10.6% E; 5% Y!) - Both pitchers are streaming options in this game. Lackey has strung together three straight quality starts after a miserable start. It helps his case that the Red Sox offense is producing. Pineiro made his first start of the season a good one against the Rays (7 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 3 K) after missing the first month of the season with shoulder issues. VEDICT: Stream Lackey at home
  • Chris Tillman, BAL (0.4% E; 2% Y!) @ Bruce Chen, KC (8.8% E; 12% Y!) - Both pitchers are streaming options in this game. Something about this match up is screaming slugfest to me. VERDICT: Avoid both pitchers at all costs.
There's one match up involving a streamer which I really like:
  • Jason Hammel, COL (3.9% E; 5% Y!) @ Ian Kennedy, ARI - Hammel has quietly gone 3-1 with a 3.23 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 18:8 K:BB ratio in 30.2 innings pitched. Team have a .283 BAA (batting average against) and a perfectly average .301 BABIP, so I think what we are seeing is for real. In six career starts against the Rockies, Kennedy is 0-1 with a 3.66 ERA, 1.44 WHIP and a 26:15 K:BB ration in 32 innings. VERDICT: Stream Hammel and be prepared to own him
Avoid streaming these available pitchers at all costs:
  • Jake Westbrook, STL (3% E; 3%Y!) vs Josh Johnson, FLA - Johnson should have been the first pitcher to throw a no-hitter this season. His stuff has been filthy.
  • Mike Pelfrey, NYM (0.9% E; 6% Y!) vs Jonathan Sanchez, SF - Pelfrey has been horrible (1-3, 7.39 ERA, 1.96 WHIP, 16:13 K:BB ratio) and until he can string together several quality starts in a row, he should be avoided.
  • Rick Porcello, DET (3.3% E; 5% Y!) vs A.J. Burnett, NYY - On any given night, the Yankees offense can go crazy on a pitcher and they seem due. Porcello could easily be the next sacrificial lamb if he's not careful.
  • John Lannan, WAS (0.7% E; 1% Y!) vs Roy Halladay, PHI - This is not so much anti-Lannan as it is pro-Halladay. Look elsewhere if you are desperate for a streamable pitcher.
  • Homer Bailey, CIN (0.4% E; 8% Y!) vs Brett Myers, HOU - Bailey is making his first start of the season and needs to string some healthy starts together before being worth a look as a streaming option.
Some might argue that it's a little early in the season to already be streaming and that might be true for the Rotisserie crowd but head-to-head leaguers need to be looking at those match ups daily to see if there's an opportunity to win a category or two with some strategic streams.

Be sure to check back each morning to see who earns COSFBA's "Line of the Day" award and nominate your own if you disagree or had a different player of impact on your squad.

Rizzo On The Rise

May 2011
Far be it from us to second-guess the Gonzo trade with San Diego. We were carping for it for over two years. For the record, we are thrilled that he'll be a mainstay in our lineup for years to come. But, of course, to get a quality player like Adrian Gonzaelz, Theo Epstein had to give up quality in return. Some of that quality is starting to show. Big time.

Anthony Rizzo, the 1B prospect in the deal, is hitting almost .400 at AAA—with 8 home runs in 25 games. Meantime, on the big club, Brad Hawpe is looking like he completely forgot how to hit. Look for Rizzo to be patrolling first base at PETCO very soon. Not that there's anything wrong with that!

Nation Says 'No' To Boggsy

May 2011
In case you had any doubts about the memories of Red Sox fans, all you need do is check out the voting in our latest FenwayNation Poll. We asked our readers if the Red Sox should retire the number 26 in honor of Hall Of Famer Wade Boggs. Boggs has expressed an interest in joining fellow Hall inductee and teammate Jim Rice. But, of course, like Johnny Damon, Boggs donned the satanic pinstripes and won a ring. Look up unforgiving in the dictionary—you'll see a picture of a Red Sox fan.

So far, a majority of voters (about 56%) oppose the number being retired. There are votes from North Vancouver, BC, Canada. There are votes from Caracas, Venezuela (hopefully not by Hugo Chavez). There's even a vote from Taipei, Taiwan, Republic of China. There's also a bunch from the good 'ol USA. But add it all up, and the number 26 seems safe to don for any Red Sox player in the foreseeable future.

Line of the Day: May 3rd, 2011

May 2011
SP Francisco Liriano of the Minnesota Twins pitched the majors first no-hitter of the season, a 1-0 victory over the Chicago White Sox. He walked six, struck out two and needed 123 pitches (66 strikes) to pitch the first complete game of his career and the fifth no-hitter in the history of the Minnesota Twins franchise.

Line: 9 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 6 BB, 2 K; W, QS, CG, SHO, No-Hitter

My fantasy perspective: Liriano had been less than stellar in his five previous starts (18:18 K:BB ratio), allowing 27 hits and 24 earned runs in 23.2 innings pitched with a 1-4 record, 9.13 ERA and a 1.90 WHIP. Ouch! His ownership numbers were down to 68.4% (-27.2%) in ESPN leagues. How do you think those owners feel about dumping him prior to a no-hitter?

This is the kind of outing Liriano needed to get some confidence back and keep his spot in the Twins' rotation (Kevin Slowey is lurking) but is 123 pitches too many for a young, struggling pitcher several years removed from Tommy John surgery? I'm glad he got his piece of history but also hope it wasn't at his own expense.

Agree? Disagree? Check out ESPN's formula for determining the best daily performances and nominate your own Line of the Day player using the comments section or hitting me up on Twitter.

Francisco Liriano throws no-hitter

Preview | Box Score | Recap

CHICAGO (AP)—Francisco Liriano(notes) pitched the major leagues’ first no-hitter of the season, throwing his first career complete game in the Minnesota Twins’1-0 victory over the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday night.
Liriano (2-4) walked six and struck out two, throwing 123 pitches in the 95th major league start for the 27-year-old left-hander.
He survived a rocky ninth inning that began when Brent Morel(notes) grounded to shortstop and Matt Tolbert(notes) made a one-hop throw that first baseman Justin Morneau(notes) scooped. Juan Pierre(notes) walked and Alexei Ramirez(notes) popped to shortstop.Liriano fell behind Adam Dunn(notes) 3-0 in the count, then got a pair of strikes. After a foul ball, Dunn lined out to Tolbert as Liriano and his Twins teammates celebrated at the mound.“I can’t explain it. I feel so nervous and so happy right now,” Liriano said. “I can’t explain my feeling right now.”Liriano threw just 66 of 123 pitches for strikes but kept Chicago off-balance in a game that took just 2 hours, 9 minutes. In his previous start, he lasted just three innings in an 8-2 loss to Tampa Bay.
