After inhaling a tasty Chimichanga at a Mexican food restaurant in Miami, Sharon and I decided to walk around the town and see if we could find another perfect abandoned place for our book. Besides we needed to walk off those Chimmies. Before hitting the restaurant, we saw a set of 100 plus stairs leading to the street above and the houses above that. There looked to be several deserted homes on that street so we climbed the stairs to the road. Thank goodness we didn’t have to climb all the stairs because this out-of-shape lady would not have made it. Along the road there were several homes empty and destroyed by the elements. (I will do a separate post on all those homes.)
We stopped at the backside of what we thought was a home. Most of the stairs leading down to the front of the property were missing and the tiny backyard was nothing but weeds. Sharon felt this place needed more investigating so we headed back down the stairs to find the front of the home.
We walked by and stopped at the area where the house was located. We were surprised to see that it was much larger and looked more like an apartment building instead of a single family home. One section of it was just unpainted rotting wood planks with a big ol’ tree in front of it. That part reminded me of the Klopek house in the movie “the ‘burbs”. The other part was painted with a blue color which was pealing from the years of harsh weather. The blue paint was how we knew that it was the same place, because from behind the building looked small.
Sharon climbed the cement stairs leading to the front door but was stopped by the buzzing of thousands of bees. She could see the huge hive inside the porch’s rotting ceiling boards. We decided not to peruse any further because if they are the “killer” bees, they would chase our asses all the way back to Phoenix and wouldn’t even break a sweat.
We used the Klopek’s section of the house to get the readings and moved on. We think that the bees probably prevented us from falling through the floorboards, but we will never know. Miami had so many desolate buildings, and we decided to try and find another one in that town. We found something a bit different and that will be my next post.
