BASEBALL IS BACK-- ST Game #1

Spring Training
Well, baseball is finally back. That means Spring is in the air (and hopefully on it's way to Ohio or any other cold climate you may live in).

I cannot even begin to tell you how happy I am. No longer will I have to watch marathon re-run's of "The Sandberg Game" on the MLB Network. Hooray!!!

I hope to keep the blog well stocked with information as the season marches on, so please continue to visit!!! I wouldn't do this if there weren't people reading.

So here we go...Spring Training Game Post #1!!!(Courtesy of the always spectacular, Peter Abraham)

Pettite, Kennedy Sharp In Minors

Spring Training

From Peter Abraham:

Andy Pettitte: 6 1 0 0 1 6. He threw 77 pitches.

Ian Kennedy: 5 4 0 0 1 5. No word on the pitch count. But he was supposed to be dialed back to 75 or so today.

“I threw 77 pitches, and that’s what I needed,” Pettitte said. “It’s exactly what I wanted to do. I feel great. Everything felt good today. Got a lot of work in. Did I have to get to 77 pitches today because I’m a little short and behind everybody? Yeah. I’m ready for my start and just looking forward to continuing to build my strength up.”

Legend's Field No Longer

Spring Training
Via Yahoo! News:
Legends Field will be renamed George M. Steinbrenner Field during ceremonies before the New York Yankees’ exhibition game against Pittsburgh on Thursday.

The Yankees have held spring training at Legends Field since 1996. The facility is also used by the Class-A Tampa Yankees.

The Steinbrenner family will unveil a new scoreboard sign in left field. Joan Steinbrenner, wife of the 77-year-old owner, is to throw out the ceremonial first pitch.

The decision to rename the stadium following resolutions supporting the change from the Hillsborough County Commission and the Tampa City Council.

In Other News:
The Yankees also announced Monday that ticket sales for the final season at Yankee Stadium have topped 3.8 million, leaving about 600,000 unsold tickets remaining. New York is 400,000 ahead of the pace it set last year, when the Yankees drew a team-record 4.27 million at home and sold out 50 of 81 games.

Hawkins, Farnsworth, Rivera...Patterson?

Spring Training

Article Courtesy of Tyler Kepner of the New York Times (edited for length):

It was not the best way to pave a path to the major leagues. It was painful, and purely accidental. But when Scott Patterson jammed his right middle finger in a door three years ago, it turned his career around.scottpatterson

Patterson, a 6-foot-6 right-hander with a herky-jerky motion, said he did not have enough polished pitches to thrive as a starter. But when his swollen finger forced him to the bullpen, he concentrated on his fastball and his slow curveball, which he says he has always thrown for strikes.

After posting a 1.09 E.R.A. in 43 games at Trenton, Patterson was promoted to Class AAA and pitched once in the playoffs. In the Venezuelan winter league, he did not allow a run or a walk in his first 13 appearances.

“He’s made enough of an impression that we think he’ll help us at some point this season,” General Manager Brian Cashman said. “We don’t know where he’ll start, but he’s still here.”

Patterson has been summoned four times this spring training, usually in the middle of an early inning, before the regulars had been taken from the opposing lineup. In six games, he has allowed no runs or walks in six innings, and opposing hitters are 1 for 18.

In the Yankees’ 7-6 victory against Cleveland on Sunday, Patterson took over for Chien-Ming Wang with one out in the fifth. He got Victor Martínez to bounce into an inning-ending double play, then worked a 1-2-3 sixth.

“All he’s done is get everybody out,” Manager Joe Girardi said. “It’s been pretty unbelievable. He’s gotten us out of jam after jam. He has a chance.”

Ian Kennedy even calls Patterson's fastball "the InvisiBall" because "nobody can hit it".

Mediocre as a starter, Patterson has been remarkable in relief. In 70 minor league games in the Yankees organization, all but one at Class AA Trenton, he was 4-3 with a 1.47 earned run average and 136 strikeouts in 116 innings.

When it comes to where Patterson will start the season he replies, “People ask me all the time, ‘Do you think you’re going to make it?"

“I tell them I’ll get the guys out. And if the Yankees want me, they want me.”

For years, no major league team wanted Scott Patterson. Two weeks before opening day, will the New York Yankees?

Yanks-Sox: Spring Training Showdown

Spring Training

Bryan Hoch/Yankees.Com

The Yankees and the Red Sox will meet on Monday at Legends Field in Tampa, more than 1,150 miles south of the Bronx and a world away in terms of the intensity level. Yet it is still Boston and New York head-to-head, and that always deserves attention.

The Yankees plan on fielding their "A" lineup for the 1:15 p.m. ET affair, with Derek Jeter, Jorge Posada and Bobby Abreu all having rested during Sunday's exhibition tilt with the Indians.

Meanwhile, the Red Sox -- just days away from a transcontinental trek to play in Japan -- are also bringing most of their stars for the two-hour-plus bus ride from Red Sox Nation's southern headquarters in Fort Myers, Fla. Manny Ramirez is the most notable player not making the trip, but captain Jason Varitek, slugger David Ortiz and reigning American League Rookie of the Year Dustin Pedroia are expected to be present and accounted for.

Left-hander Andy Pettitte will get the call for his third start of the spring, scheduled to throw 60 pitches after missing his last appearance due to a mild left forearm strain, and the Yankees will get their first look at Bartolo Colon since the burly right-hander found a new uniform.

MLB Suspends Duncan, Melk-Man

Spring Training

Discipline has been issued to six members of the New York Yankees and Tampa Bay Rays as a result of the bench-clearing incident that occurred during the top of the second inning of their Wednesday, March 12th Spring Training game at Progress Energy Park, Home of Al Lang Field, in St. Petersburg, Florida. Bob Watson, Vice President of On-Field Operations for Major League Baseball, made the announcement.

Shelley Duncan of the Yankees has been suspended for three games and fined an undisclosed amount for his violent and reckless actions, which incited the bench-clearing incident. Unless appealed, Duncan's suspension is scheduled to begin on Monday, March 31st, when the Yankees host the Toronto Blue Jays in their first game of the 2008 Championship Season.

Jonny Gomes of the Rays has been suspended for two games and fined an undisclosed amount for his violent actions, which escalated the bench-clearing incident. Unless appealed, the suspension of Gomes is scheduled to begin on Monday, March 31st, when the Rays play at Oriole Park at Camden Yards in Baltimore in their first game of the 2008 Championship Season.

Melky Cabrera of the Yankees has been suspended for three games and fined an undisclosed amount for his violent and aggressive actions during the incident. Unless appealed, Cabrera's suspension is scheduled to begin on Monday, March 31st.

In addition, New York manager Joe Girardi, third base coach Bobby Meacham and hitting coach Kevin Long have been fined for their roles in the incident.

"A" Lineup Traveling To VT

Spring Training

Bryan Hoch/Yankees.com

Yankees manager Joe Girardi said on Thursday that the team plans to bring its entire starting lineup for a scheduled exhibition at Virginia Tech. New York agreed to schedule the game last season in the wake of the April 16 shootings on the campus, where 32 were killed and many more were wounded. ribbon

"I think it's a wonderful opportunity for our players to see that you don't take life for granted," Girardi said.

Immediately following the tragedy, Yankees principal owner George M. Steinbrenner pledged $1 million to the Virginia Tech "Hokie Spirit Memorial Fund." In addition, the Yankees wore special caps bearing the VT logo for a game at Yankee Stadium.

"Mr. Steinbrenner cares about people," Girardi said. "He's always had a big heart, and he's always reached out to communities. I think it's a great thing for our club. We never know what's in store for tomorrow, so I think it's important that you give your greatest effort every day."

The roster for the trip has not been finalized, but Girardi confirmed that right-hander Jeff Karstens will make the start against Virginia Tech.  He also said the Yankees will bring their "A" lineup, including team captain Derek Jeter, third baseman Alex Rodriguez, catcher Jorge Posada and the rest.

Mussina Proving Bounceback Could Be Reality

Spring Training

PA has the rundown on his live Blog

There is no stopping Mike Mussina.  15 up and 15 down. 64 pitches/39 strikes. He toyed with Adam LaRoche in the fifth inning. Changeup for a strike, curveball away for a strike then a 1-2 fastball away for strikeout looking.  Back with more later.

'Attaboy Shelley!!!

Spring Training

shelleyfightstherays

It seems as though Shelley Duncan was ready to play some hardball against the Rays today.  Honestly, my first game of Spring Training missed and this is the one!!!  By the way.  Shelley Duncan is gangster.

Mark Feinsand of the New York Daily News has the first-person account of the incident:

It didn’t take long for the bad blood between the Yankees and Rays to surface Wednesday, as a hit batsman and a hard slide sparked a bench-clearing incident in the second inning.

Heath Phillips, starting in place of an injured Andy Pettitte, was ejected with two outs in the first after brushing Rays third baseman Evan Longoria across the chest with a pitch.

Yankees manager Joe Girardi argued the ejection, but home plate umpire Chad Fairchild stood by his decision.

Shelley Duncan led off the top of the second with a base hit to left field, which he tried to stretch into a double. With the throw beating him easily to second, Duncan came sliding hard into second baseman Akinori Iwamura, leading with his spikes.

Second-base ump Charlie Reliford immediately ejected Duncan, who had made some thinly veiled comments a few days ago about ratcheting up the intensity of the spring games against the Rays after watching Tampa Bay infielder Elliot Johnson bowl over Yankees catcher Francisco Cervelli last weekend, fracturing Cervelli’s wrist.

With Duncan still on the ground following his hard slide, Rays right fielder Jonny Gomes sprinted in and jumped on Duncan, prompting both benches to clear. The two teams tangled around second base for a few minutes, though it didn’t appear any punches were thrown.

Duncan and Gomes were ejected, as were Yankees third-base coach Bobby Meacham and hitting coach Kevin Long.

Cervelli Hurt, Girardi Understandably Upset

Spring Training

Bryan Hoch of Yankees.com has the story:

Yankees manager Joe Girardi criticized the Rays for a violent home-plate collision on Saturday that fractured prospect Francisco Cervelli's right wrist.

But Rays manager Joe Maddon called the play "hardball," saying that there was nothing dirty at all about infielder Elliott Johnson's ninth-inning decision to hit the catcher hard.

The play occurred in Tampa Bay's 4-1 victory at Legends Field, as Johnson was trying to score on a Willy Aybar double to left field. Johnson lowered his shoulder and tried to jar the ball loose from Cervelli, who was guarding the plate as a relay throw came in.

Cervelli held on to record the putout, the second out of the inning, but he had to leave the game after being attended to on the field. Cervelli was rushed to St. Joseph's Hospital in Tampa for X-rays, and the Yankees said that his wrist will be casted on Saturday night.

"I think it's uncalled for," Girardi said. "It's Spring Training. You get people hurt, and that's what we've got -- we've got Cervelli hurt. I know they had an incident four or five days ago. I'm all for playing hard, but I don't think it's the time when you run over a catcher in Spring Training."

Maddon had a differing point of view, speaking with reporters before he learned of Girardi's comments. He would later decline comment to a second wave of reporters.

Moose Solid In Second Start

Spring Training

From Peter Abraham's Live Blog:

Great outing for Mike Mussina today: 2.2 innings, 2 hits, 1 run, 2 walks, 5 strikeouts. The run came on a wind-blown homer and one of the walks was a travesty. He threw 30 of his 54 pitches for strikes and had four strikeouts looking.

Mussina was able to locate his curveball and throw his fastball for strikes. YES did not have its gun working but Mussina seemed to be 91-92, which is fine for him.

Yankees vs. Rays 3/8/08 1:15 pm

Spring Training

The Yankees will play their ninth game of their 31-game spring training schedule today vs. the Tampa Bay Rays at Legends Field. Right handed pitcher Mike Mussina will take the mound and is scheduled to be followed by RHP Jeff Karstens, RHP Jonathan Albaladejo, RHP Kyle Farnsworth.

Right handed pitcher Matt Garza will make the start for the Rays.

Peter Abraham has the lineup:

Damon LF
Jeter SS
Abreu RF
Rodriguez DH (with Posada to follow him)
Giambi 1B
Cano 2B
Ransom 3B
Molina C

YES Takes A Look At The 'Pen

Spring Training

Yankees Fall To Astros 9-5

Spring Training

ASTROS 9, YANKEES 5
at Tampa, Fla.
Friday, March 7

Yankees at the plate: Alex Rodriguez's sore shoulder didn't hold the designated hitter back from drilling a double to left for the first hit of the game in the second inning. Jason Lane and Brett Gardner also doubled in the frame to tie the game at 2. Gardner added a leadoff triple in the fifth to finish perfect (2-for-2) at the plate. Wilson Betemit smacked his second homer of the year in the sixth inning to tie the game at 5.

Yankees on the mound: Steven White took the loss after he allowed three runs (two earned) over the sixth and seventh innings, walked two and fanned one. Mariano Rivera worked an inning for the first time this spring and did it with pizzazz. The closer retired the side on just eight pitches in the third inning, which included a first-pitch groundout sandwiched between two punch outs. In his second start, Pettitte sat the Astros down in order in the first frame, but he hit Geoff Blum with a pitch to start the second and served up a homer to Diaz two pitches later to dig himself a hole. Pettitte earned a no-decision, and he was hooked in favor of Edwar Ramirez after he reached his pitch count midway through the second.

Grapefruit League record: Yankees 3-3.

Up next: The Yankees remain at Legends Field, where they'll face the Rays in a Saturday matchup at 1:15 p.m. ET. Right-hander Mike Mussina (0-0, 18.00 ERA) is scheduled to toe the bump for New York, and Tampa Bay will counter with righty Matt Garza (0-0, 10.80).

Three Up, Three Down For Mariano
