Ruth/Gehrig Picture Will Likely Fetch $100,000
Larry McShane/New York Daily News:

Once worth a mere thousand words, a vintage picture of Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig could bring a record $100,000 at auction.

The two Yankees Hall of Famers were captured side by side on the dugout steps in Pittsburgh during the 1927 World Series, where the pair helped the Pinstripers sweep the Pirates for the championship.

The sluggers stand holding bats in their right hands, with Gehrig smiling into the camera while a serious Ruth looks off to his right.

The road uniforms read "YANKEES" across the jerseys, in the era before the team switched its style to "NEW YORK."

The original photograph, unpublished for decades, could become the first sports photo to sell for more than $100,000, predicted Josh Leland Evans, founder of the Lelands.com auction house.

The picture is now available online for bidding at Lelands.com through June 6.

The 1927 Yankees team, with Ruth and Gehrig at the heart of its "Murderers Row," is considered by many to have been the greatest baseball team ever.

The Yankees lost just 44 times that season as Ruth hit his record 60 home runs, while Gehrig - the league MVP - swatted 47.
