Now that the Yankees have traded for Curtis Granderson and locked up Andy Pettitte, the topic that sure to dominate the discussion over the next few weeks is Roy Halladay. The Blue Jays have let it be known that they are willing to move their ace, who is one of the best pitchers in baseball, but only for a package that fits their needs and long term plans. Even though the Yankees have one of, if not the, best team on paper right now, they have the pieces and the payroll to make a serious run at Halladay...but should they?
Yes, the Yankees should trade for Halladay
- They have the chance to build a legitimate dynasty
- Halladay would make them the runaway favorites to win the World Series
- The trio of Sabathia-Halladay-Burnett would be nearly unstoppable
- Prevent the Red Sox from getting Halladay
No, the Yankees should not trade for Halladay
- The deal is likely to cost the Yankees Jesus Montero and/or Phil Hughes and or Joba Chamberlain
- Do the Yankees really want to gut their farm system by trading away so many high end young prospects?
- How much longer can Halladay be an ace? At some point he has to decline, right?
- Halladay is only signed through 2010, which means they will either have to extend him or risk losing him after only one season
- Adds an additional $15 million to the 2010 payroll
Verdict: Halladay will cost the Yankees a hefty price, but if they have the opportunity to pull this off, then I would absolutely do it. With that said, I would be very hesitant to give up two players out of this group (Montero, Hughes, Chamberlain), so I would expect the Yankees to try and negotiate the price down as much as possible. But all the pieces are in place for the Yankees to make a strong run at the Blue Jays' ace.
