High Schooler Told Fukudome Shirt To Vulgar

Worthless
File this under hilarious (and ridiculous).

Apparently a 15-year old girl was told at a (Chicago!!!) High School that she had to change her shirt because an administrator didn't know how to pronounce Kosuke Fukudome's last name. He obviously thought that it was the OTHER pronunciation lol.

Another administrator then said that until she checked it out, the girl would have to change her shirt for gym-class.

Wow. No one could figure out who Kosuke Fukudome was in a Chicago High School???

Mike Danahey/Chicago Sun Times:

What's in a name? Ask Chicago Cubs fan Jill Howe, 15.

The Elgin High School sophomore had to remove her Kosuke Fukudome jersey and wear a gym T-shirt to class Wednesday because of a misunderstanding about how to pronounce the All-Star right-fielder's last name.

"Someone stopped me in the hall and asked me what the back of my jersey said," Jill said. She replied that it was the name of Cubs player, pronounced foo-koo-DOUGH-may. The school staffer wasn't so sure and consulted others.

Then a dean, Susan Matei, told Howe the jersey was inappropriate. Matei made Jill take it off and wear a gym shirt instead.

Jill called her mother after school to tell her what happened.

"She's a big Cubs fan, and we got the jersey at Dick's," said Jill's mom, Nancy Howe. "We were going to get a [Kerry] Wood one, but it cost more."

Nancy Howe called Matei, who confirmed what happened.

"I told her anyone's last name can be misconstrued," Nancy Howe said.

By late afternoon, common sense -- and proper pronunciation -- prevailed.

Associate Principal Alan Flota said students may wear Fukudome apparel at school.

"As long as it is a legitimate name, they will be allowed to wear it," Flota said.

Buffo The World's Strongest Clown

Worthless
Another random post, but I was on the Toledo, Ohio Summer Fair website and saw that Buffo The Clown will be performing there. I mean I had never heard of Buffo The Clown but I think it might be the weirdest thing I have ever seen.

Now we know how Jose Canseco has been getting grocery money...
As "Buffo the World's Strongest Clown," the Evans City resident juggles chain saws, smashes cinder blocks and rips phone books in half as part of his regular routine. He's a Himalayan mountain of muscle in white face paint who could effortlessly twist Ronald McDonald into a complex balloon animal.

"Sometimes, people want to mess with the clown and they make fun of me when I do my adult shows in bars," Buffo explains. "That's when I usually rip off the (Velcro) sleeves and pick those people up off the ground. Then they back down. You don't want to mess with me."

Bigger than the biceps and bravado, however, is his soft spot for kids -- especially those afflicted with mental and physical handicaps. Prior to becoming a traveling carnival act, Toman earned a master's degree in special education at the University of Pittsburgh and spent seven years as a teacher at Western Pennsylvania School for the Blind.

Long before the eye-popping theatrics and bulbous red nose, Toman was a sixth-round draft pick (128th overall) of the Chicago White Sox in 1974. He spent six summers in the minors with stops in the Pittsburgh Pirates and Houston Astros organizations as a center fielder.

Despite being an aggressive, energetic player who possessed the legs of a gazelle (Toman averaged 40 to 50 stolen bases a season), Toman never advanced past Class AA.

Nevertheless, an identity was formed.

While his baseball career slowly fizzled, Toman killed time in the dugout by learning how to juggle baseballs.

Buffo can bench press a circus elephant and turn the boldest of hecklers a shade of white that rivals his makeup. But he's also a gentle giant, fueled solely by the innocent laughter of children.
Hahahaha...wow.

Jose Canseco Get's Knocked The *bleep* Out

Nothing to do with the Yankees, but Jose Canseco is an idiot and I wanna make sure everyone knows it.

So much for your "martial art background", Jose.

Does Japan Offer A Return Policy For Terrible Pitchers?

Bryan Hoch/MLB.Com:
Kei Igawa was hit hard and often in his first start of the season, making an early exit as the Yankees dropped a 6-5 decision to the Tigers at Comerica Park on Friday in the opener of a seven-game road trip for New York.

Recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to start in place of demoted righty Ian Kennedy, the 28-year-old left-hander continued his struggles at the big league level, recording just two swinging strikes among the 64 pitches he threw over three-plus innings.

First things first. Fire the scout that thought it would be a wonderful decision to bring Kei Igawa to New York instead of Matsuzaka.

Second, now we all can clearly understand what was pissing Ian Kennedy off. I mean, I guess you really had no choice but to demote him but if I was being demoted so that freaking Kei Igawa could start in my place, I would have said a little bit more about how pissed I was than Kennedy did.

Third, bring Kennedy back up, without question. Ouch. Just two swinging strikes in 64 pitches? Really? I haven't pitched since high school, but I am pretty darn sure I could do no worse.

Ahhh!!! It's My Exam Time... :-(

Honestly...this is a very important time for the Yankees and I know it....

But it is also a very important time for me. Unfortunately, I have exam's all of this week and I am really struggling to find time to update the Blog.

But I will be back...and we will ride this crazy wave together...right down to the first World Series game these '08 Yankees are destined to play in this year....Just please give me a few days and I will be back at it hardcore...I promise...

Thank you so much for your patience (with me and the Yanks)...I really appreciate it....

A-Rod, Santana To Be Neighbors

Worthless
Not really anything but a little gossip, but I thought I would pass it along:

Mets ace Johan Santana and Yankees star Alex Rodriguez, New York City's two richest baseball players, could soon be neighbors in the same posh upper East Side building.

A-Rod is in contract to buy a $13.5 million penthouse on East End Ave. in the same glass tower where Santana is looking to put down at least $7.5 million for his own sprawling pad, real estate sources told the Daily News yesterday.

"I don't see why A-Rod and Santana can't live in the same neighborhood," said Yankees fan Danny Dix, 47, who has an apartment near the building. "I have a couple of friends who live in the neighborhood who are Mets fans, and we're getting along."

Santana was spotted at the not-quite-finished building recently with an interior decorator, going over plans for a fifth-floor condo, construction workers at the site said yesterday.

A-Rod has been eying the building since last summer, when he was first seen visiting the 5,000-square-foot, five-bedroom penthouse.

Neighbors said the 20-story, 106-unit building near E. 88th St. and overlooking Gracie Mansion and Carl Schurz Park would be perfect for the two family men.

"It's got the park. It's got the river. It's quiet. It's a haven," said local resident Susan Berry, a nutrition counselor.

The building features a fully equipped gym, a squash court, a golf simulator, a billiards room, a playroom for kids and a 40-seat movie screening room.

Canseco Set To Make Fool Of Self On National TV

Worthless

In an exclusive interview with "Nightline" co-anchor Martin Bashir and Jose Canseco talk about the explosive allegations in his new book, including his claim that he put star New York Yankee third baseman Alex Rodriguez in touch with a trainer who was also a supplier of steroids.

Canseco acknowledged to Bashir that he does not know whether the trainer -- whom he calls "Max" -- actually provided steroids to Rodriguez.

"I cannot bet my life on it … that Alex Rodriguez ever used steroids," he told Bashir, "but in my opinion, I suspect he has, yes." When challenged by Bashir to identify "Max" or to provide other evidence to support his claims, Canseco said "the timing's not right."

"That's just not a good enough answer," Bashir said. "Why don't you produce the evidence?"

"Let's see how Alex reacts to this," Canseco said. "Let's see how Alex reacts. Let's see if they call me a liar again. How's that for ya? Let's see if all of a sudden they're gonna call me a liar again."

You can watch Martin Bashir and Jose "The Clown" Canseco's interview tonight (3/27/08) on ABC's "Nightline" at 11:35 p.m. ET.

Article courtesy of Steve Hofstetter of the New York Times:

I’ve always wanted to own a baseball team. Ten years ago, I even purchased one share of the Cleveland Indians for $16. It was either buy the stock or buy a commemorative cup of soda.

But fans, even those who own a novelty share of stock, do not control their teams. If we did, Isiah Thomas would be collecting unemployment, Yankee Stadium bleachers would still serve beer, and the Dodgers would have never left Flatbush.

Instead, Thomas received a contract extension, Bleacher Creatures have to start slurring before the game, and the only rivalry the Dodgers inspire is between fans who leave in the sixth inning and fans who leave in the seventh.

Enter Joe Scura, the mind behind Project Franchise, a group with a mission to buy a sports team and let the fans vote on every decision.

Yes, every decision. Next time Fox wants to advertise its hilarious new cop-and-dog buddy flick behind home plate, it may have to poll the fans.

“Something like this has been a long time coming, but the Internet has finally made it feasible,” Scura said. “Fans are more than just piggy banks/hot dog receptacles.”

For $5, fans can buy a vote and act as the collective general manager, deciding on everything from personnel to team colors. That could have helped the Tampa Bay Devil Rays when they decided that pastels belonged in a logo. The Rays have since rebranded in dark green and dropped the devil from their name. Word has it the devil himself no longer wanted to be associated with the team.

This isn’t merely some “leave Britney alone” Internet lark. The leadership of Project Franchise consists of lawyers, Web gurus and business school graduates who probably have more sports skill than, say, a shipbuilder.

Although the group has some allegiance toward its base in Miami, it is not considering the Dolphins, the Heat, the Marlins or the Panthers. The members are, after all, in the market for a professional sports team. The closest thing Miami has to a professional team is the Hurricanes, and not only because 13 of them were suspended for brawling.

“Any fan could have done a better job than the Dolphin front office,” Scura said before expanding his grief. “Every generation has their own Isiah Thomas or Matt Millen.”

Scura’s Isiah Thomas is Randy Mueller. My Isiah Thomas is Isiah Thomas.

The collective general manager would not technically own the team, as public offering laws would make that prohibitively expensive. But fans would be the deciders. And to borrow another term from President Bush, that is virtuably incomprehensifying.

The main difference between fans and owners is that fans care more about the bottom of the ninth than the bottom line. Occasionally, a fan is rich enough to become an owner, but the N.B.A. fines him until he quiets down.

Some owners know they can sell tickets regardless of whom they sign. The reason the Chicago Cubs routinely disappoint fans is because they would still sell out even if it had been decades since they won anything. Wait a minute. ...

Owners who are in it only to turn a profit (I’m looking at you, Carl Pohlad) can ruin the game. But so can some fans. (I’m looking at you, Steve Bartman.) Fans touched off the Pistons-Pacers brawl, and fans attacked an opposing coach and an umpire in two incidents in Chicago. I would love to run a team, because then any fan who left the seats would be immediately punished — perhaps with a public flogging, or a trade to the Timberwolves.

And fans are not immune to front-office mistakes, either. Most Mets fans were excited when they signed Bobby Bonilla. The team would have been better off spending that money on a bag of magic beans. At least the beans would not have struck out 100 times in a season.

What if fans made the calls? No one would ever be reprimanded for failing to shave sideburns. Players would sign autographs for hours at every game, lest they be traded because “the bum didn’t sign a ball for my kid.” Most important, no one at the game could complain.

That could cut into attendance a bit because some fans go to games only to complain. If fans went to games solely to enjoy the experience, no one would ever watch the Detroit Lions.

The Green Bay Packers would be celebrating Brett Favre’s unretirement.

Steroids would be legal in San Francisco. The Baseball Hall of Fame would unveil its new Pete Rose Wing, just outside of Cooperstown (in Cincinnati). I don’t know how things would be different in Kansas City, because it has been a while since sports fans lived there.

But Project Franchise will probably have to settle for a minor, development, arena or junior league team. Unless this idea becomes bigger than Britney (which these days is pretty big), Project Franchise does not have a realistic chance of buying a major club.

So maybe it will buy the Dolphins after all.

My Spring Break

Worthless
If you have been wondering why I have not been posting recently it's because I have been really pretty busy during the last few weeks. My Spring Break started last Thursday and after studying and taking tests for all last week, I went back home to Columbus, Ohio for the weekend. It was a pretty big weekend in Columbus because of the Arnold Fitness Classic. There was also a Ultimate Fighting Championship fight in town on Saturday so that is always a huge event.

It was my dad's birthday Saturday night and we were able to get pretty much the whole family together for a great meal at Bravo, so that was a good time. Happy Birthday, Dad!

I don't know how many of you like mixed martial arts, but I have to plug one of my good friends Jon Kuhner. Jon was the main event of the Superior Fighting League in Columbus, Ohio and won by knockout in less than a minute. He is not quite UFC or Pride Figting level yet but he is a pretty darn good fighter.

I will be following up with some Spring Training stuff shortly. Stay tuned and thanks again for reading!!!

Yanks Allowed Facial Hair In 2008?

Worthless
River Avenue Blues just posted a list of nine of Joe Girardi's seventeen new commandments for Yankee players. Here's what has been discovered so far...

1. Be on time. No excuse for lateness.

2. Shorts and T-shirts only permitted during spring training.

3. Curfew of 1 a.m.

4. Jewelry - only one chain is permitted. No earrings.

5. Only neatly cut beards, mustaches, goatees. No long hair or “unshaven looks.”

6. No family members in the clubhouse until after games.

7. No cell phones in the dugout.

8. Cell phones only allowed in the clubhouse until one hour before games.

9. No competing speakers in the clubhouse.

Pay special attention to #5 as it looks as though it supersedes King George’s Law of Facial Purity. No one knows if these are only Spring Training rules or if they will extend into the regular season. I will try to post the rest of the commandments as they are uncovered.

Druken Orgies and Softball-- In Prison

Worthless
This has nothing to do with the Yankees but with all of the talk floating around about steroids, players, liars, and jail time I had to post this. Don't be shy to leave a comment and let me know what you think about this monumental waste of tax dollars...

From Abbie Boudreau and Scott Zamost of CNN.com:
Softball, drunken orgies and a prison system run like the mafia. That's what Florida's former prison secretary says he inherited when he took over one of the nation's largest prison systems two years ago.

Florida Prison secretary, James McDonough, described a bizarre prison culture among those that ran the system -- one that he says seemed obsessed with inter-department softball games and the drunken orgies after the games.

"I cannot explain how big an obsession softball had become," he said. "People were promoted on the spot after a softball game at the drunken party to high positions in the department because they were able to hit a softball out of the park a couple times."

"Guards were importing and selling steroids throughout the prison in an effort to give them an edge on the softball field."

"The connection between the softball and the parties and the corruption and the beatings was greatly intertwined."

The parties and orgies were often carried out at a waterfront house built on prison grounds for a former warden with taxpayer dollars, McDonough said. The house was complete with a bar, pool table and hot tub where the orgies were held.

Yep, that's right kids-- steroids and drunken orgies aren't just for baseball players and 50 cent anymore.

They are for prison guards as well. Wow...
