Cano In Top Shape This Winter

November 2008
Tyler Kepner/New York Times:

Yankees hitting coach Kevin Long, has returned from
his tutorials with Robinson Canó in the Dominican Republic and with Alex Rodriguez in Miami. The way Long figures, Canó could bat directly ahead of Rodriguez, who hits cleanup, or directly behind him. Either way, Long expects both to improve.

Canó, Long said, has dedicated himself to physical fitness and is in “immaculate condition.” And Rodriguez, he said, is in a better frame of mind after dealing with a divorce last season.

Canó has also made an important mechanical adjustment, scrapping the open stance he had lapsed into and reducing the movement before his swing. Long said he knew the swing would be in order when he visited Canó for six days during the week of Nov. 9, but he had no idea Canó would be in such good shape.

“He’s got a personal trainer, and he’s probably down to 10 or 11 percent body fat,” Long said. “This kid is focused, he’s determined. I’ve never seen him like this. His arms are cut, his stomach is cut. He’s doing hitting, throwing, agility work — and these workouts at night, I watched them, and they’re grueling. I told him I was so proud of him.”

3 Sheets to the Wind

November 2008
I really don't get it.

There is  a ton of talk about AJ Burnett and the myriad of teams set to offer him obscene money for a thousand year's work. Why almost NO mention of Ben Sheets?

As I mentioned earlier, and as RAB thereafter agreed with, Sheets is probably a better all-around option. Less injury over his career (to less problematic parts of his body), less years and money needed to sign, younger, and as much upside and talent as AJ.

It's possible that Cash is simply staying in the Burnett game to drive the price up for the Dread Sox. Or it's also likely that he has genuine interest in AJ. Either way, I really hope that Cashman sees that Sheets is a better option and nabs him before Atlanta does.

2008 Offseason Plan of Action

November 2008
So here we are, November 22, and after examining the market and all of the players it's time for the YankeeGM plan of attack for the 2008 offseason.

Taking the roster position-by-position:

Catcher-

Keep 'em crossed that Hip Hip Jorge is able to catch 100 games in 2009, and the Molina holds up for the other 62. Francisco Cervelli is the next option; let's hope he gets to take the full year at AAA.

1B-

An upgrade here is a must. Trading for Swisher is a nice move, but I would like to see him as a 4th OF, back-up 1B rather than the everyday guy. Texiera is the obvious first choice. A 7 year $155mm deal should get it done. Other options are extremely limited - Prince Fielder, Ryan Howard, and Adriane Gonzalez may be attainable, but would prove to be far too expensive in terms of prospects.

Target - Tex

2B - Robbie
SS- Jeet
3B Arod

Corner OF -

We are flush at the corner OF positions with less than spectacular options. Hmat, Damon, Nady and Swisher would all be vying for time if the season started today. While adding Manny to play RF would make for one hell of a lineup, that simply is not going to happen. Provided we get Tex we could live with the 4 of these players for 3 spots (RF, LF, DH). I expect we would see some drop off from both Hmat and Damon, but they would still be quite productive players IF they stay healthy. Swisher should rebound from an abysmal season to something around 250/27/90 390 OBP. Nady was on the cusp of a breakout season when traded to the Yanks last year; I think he will continue that break out now that he's more comfortable being a Yankee. I see 300/25/100 from the X man in 2009.

CF - Gardner/Melky. With AJax coming in '10, there's no reason to make a move in CF for '09. I start Gardner there and see if he can get on base enough to be a royal pain in the ass when he does. If not, we know Melk will play a plus CF and hopefully hit better than 250.

Rotation -

The big move is obviously getting CC in pinstripes. Assuming that gets done, my next move would be to get Ben Sheets. While everyone has been talking about AJ Burnett, I think the better sign would be Sheets. He is 2 years younger than AJ, and if we are going to take a flyer on an injury prone starter I would rather it be the younger guy. Both Sheets and Burnett have the ability to be a top of the 'ro guy if healthy. Having spent his career in the NL central pitching in such parks as Wrigley and Minute Maid, his numbers should only be about half a run worse in the AL east. Rounding out the rottion with Andy , Wang and Joba would leave a starting 5 of -

1 - CC
2 - Sheets
3 - Wang
4 - Pettitte
5 - Joba
6. Hughes, Aceves, Geiss

In order to execute we would need the following signings (with anticipated deals)

CC - 6 years, $150mm ($25mm/yr, 34 at contract end)
Sheets - 4 years, $70mm (4th year vests based on IP) ($17.5mm/yr, 33 at contract end)
Texiera - 7 years, $165mm ($23.5mm/yr, 36 at contract end)
Pettitte - 1 yr, $11mm (old)

These 3 deals cost the Yanks a total of $77mm per year; well below the $88mm that came off the books after the season. In terms of payroll, my plan is not a problem.

The potential problems to executing would be an inability to sign any of the free agents I listed; Tex might want to take the Angel's money, CC might want to be a hitting pitcher on the west coast, and Sheets might want to go to the pitcher's haven in Atlanta. Barring any of these guys pulling a Greg Maddux, however (Maddux took less money from the Braves than the Yanks offered when he left Chicago), the Yanks could, and should get each one.

Mike Mussina Set To Announce Retirement After 18 Seasons

November 2008
Thank you for everything, Moose!!! Enjoy your time with your family.

Tien Mao/Gothamist.com:

30 wins short of 300 career victories and after the first 20-win season of his career, Yankees pitcher Mike Mussina is reportedly retiring. The 39 year-old Mussina, who has pitched in the Majors for 18 seasons with the Orioles and the Yankees, retires with a 270-153 record and a 3.68 ERA. Fox Sports says that Mussina will officially announce his retirement later this week. And while Moose doesn't have 300 wins (the gold standard for Hall of Fame inductees), Fox points out that his Hall of Fame electability will be enhanced by the fact that he pitched in the steroid era and in the offense-heavy AL East.

Peavy Thoughts

November 2008
If we weren't willing to trade the farm last year for Santana, why would we be willing to do it for Jake Peavy?

Peavy has been a great pitcher - in the National League. Peavy has been a great pitcher in the NL WEST. Off the top of my head the only other pitcher I can remember coming from the NL west to the AL was Chan Ho Park. Park's last 2 year with the Dodgers - 3.27 and 3.50; Park's first 2 years with the Rangers - 5.75 and 7.58.

Don't get me wrong - Peavy is substantially better than Park; but there is no doubt that switching from the NL west to the AL east will increase his ERA - the question is by how much. I believe it is a change worthy of a full point in ERA. This makes Peavy around a 4.00 era pitchers for the Yanks. I don't know about you, but I think Hughes will put up numbers better than a 4.00 era!

With more proven options available without having to give up any prospects, we as Yankee fans can completely ignore all of those Peavy to Yanks rumors and concentrate on the things that actually have  chance of happening.

Rasner Sold To Japan/Lebron On CC

November 2008
The New York Yankees and Brian Cashman worked out a deal on Saturday to sell the rights to pitcher Darrel Rasner to the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles of the Japanese Pacific League. Apparently, Rasner heard that there was some speculation that a few Japanese teams had interest in acquiring him, and upon finding this out Rasner told his agent to work to get a deal brokered.

“I just have to hope and pray that this is good for me and my family,” Rasner said by telephone from his home in Reno, Nev. “Having another kid, that kind of changes everything. I just think now’s the time to try to do something and try to get the stability that I need for those guys.”

________________________________________________

In other news, the Yankees biggest fan in the NBA, Lebron James, said that he absolutely believes that CC Sabathia will suit up for the 2009 season in the prestigious Pinstripes.

Lebron and CC are really good friends and this can absolutly been seen as an promising indicator of the Yankees chances on acquiring the 28 year old workhorse.

Yankees Acquire Nick Swisher For Jeff Marquez

November 2008
Jerry Crasnick/ESPN.com is reporting that the New York Yankees have acquired first baseman Nick Swisher from the White Sox in exchange for minor league pitcher Jeff Marquez.

A Little Insight From The Skipper

November 2008
These little blurbs from skipper Joe Girardi are courtesy of Yankees.com beat writer Bryan Hoch's Bombers Beat Blog. If you have not checked it out yet, please do!

  • The Yankees want C.C. Sabathia, no surprise there, but Girardi acknowledged that the needs are beyond more than one guy. The Yankees ranked the list of potential pitching free agents with scouts in the room during the organizational meetings in Tampa. They were ranked in order, and different views were incorporated into that order.

"We would like to add as many as we can," Girardi said.

  • Girardi said that he is excited to have LHP Damaso Marte back, and reiterated that he believed the early workload wore him down and led to the 5.40 ERA. Girardi said he has not called players with recruiting pitches for the Yankees yet but believes it will be beneficial to bring players in to tour the new stadium.

"When players get a chance to look at our new stadium, they're going to be quite impressed," he said.

  • The Yankees want to get better defensively and more athletic defensively, he said. Girardi called first base "a void to address" and said it was among their most major concerns. Girardi sees Brett Gardner and Melky Cabrera battling for center field. Johnny Damon is the leadoff hitter and left fielder.

  • New first base coach Mick Kelleher brings the perspective of an organizational man who has existing relationships with players like Robinson Cano and Derek Jeter, having been around in Spring Training. Tony Pena, the new bench coach, boasts big league managerial experience, though that should not be taken as a slight against Rob Thomson.

Yankees Add Kelleher To Coaching Staff

November 2008
Press Release/Yankees.com:

The New York Yankees announced today Joe Girardi's coaching staff for the 2009 season. Mick Kelleher was named the Yankees' first base coach, Rob Thomson will take over as third base coach and Tony Pena will assume the role of bench coach. Dave Eiland (pitching coach), Kevin Long (hitting coach) and Mike Harkey (bullpen coach) will return in the roles they served in 2008.

Kelleher, 61, will enter his first year as the Yankees' first base coach having spent the previous three seasons as the organization's roving infield instructor. This will be his third stint as a Major League coach, serving three years as Detroit's first base coach from 2003-05 and as Jim Leyland's first base coach and infield instructor with Pittsburgh in 1986.

Prior to his three seasons in Detroit, Kelleher was the Yankees' roving defensive coordinator from 1996-2002 as well as a Major League scout in 1998. His other Minor League coaching duties were with the San Diego Padres (1984-85), Chicago Cubs (1987-92) and Milwaukee Brewers (1994-95) organizations. A third round draft pick by St. Louis in 1969, Kelleher played 11 seasons at the Major League level with the Cardinals (1972-73, '75), Houston Astros (1974), Chicago Cubs (1976-80), Detroit Tigers (1981-82) and California Angels (1982). He finished his career with a .974 lifetime fielding percentage, appearing in games at second base, third base and shortstop. He won two Rawlings Silver Glove Awards (1972, '75) in the minors as the National Association's best shortstop.

Free Agent Frenzy 2008 Almost Upon Us

November 2008
One day and two hours (what day is it again?! lol) and counting until the opening of the Free Agent market.

I can see visions of C.C.'s dancing through my head...what a horrible, horrible image.

Bring it on!!!

So What's Up With Posada?

November 2008
Not a lot has been said about Jorge Posada since the season ended in September, but the New York Daily News' Anthony McCarron had a blurb a few days back in an article, so I will copy it for you below in case you missed it.
Jorge Posada, who had shoulder surgery during the season, said his rehab has been smooth and he expects to be 100% by March 1. He said he is "100%" confident he will be the Yankees' regular catcher next season. Asked about the possibility of playing first base, Posada said, "I want to be a catcher. I enjoy being behind the plate, being there for my pitchers. I think I'm a better player behind the plate than anywhere else."

P.S.- Nice dress Mrs. Posada!

Yankees Ink Marte; More To Follow Shortly

November 2008
I figured the Yankees couldn't pass on Marte while they had him locked up. The money is right, the years maybe a tad long...but a better option than Farnsworth for the 8th inning in my opinion.
The New York Yankees signed left-handed relief pitcher Damaso Marte to a three-year contract on Wednesday.

The move came after the Yankees declined Marte's contract option for 2009, making him a free agent.

Financial terms were not disclosed, but the New York Daily News reported that the deal is worth 12 million dollars.

Marte and outfielder Xavier Nady were acquired from the Pittsburgh Pirates on July 26 for pitchers Ross Ohlendorf and Jeff Karstens and a pair of minor league players.

Marte struggled to adjust after the trade, posting a 1-3 record with a 5.40 ERA in 25 appearances for the Yankees.

But in his final 16 appearances, over 11 innings from August 16 to the end of the season, he allowed just two earned runs.

Hal And Cisco To Hold Press Conference On New Stadium Technology

November 2008

Hal Steinbrenner will be holding a press conference with Cisco tomorrow afternoon to discuss new technological innovations that will be implemented in the new Yankee Stadium. The press release said that it would center mostly on fan-facing technology which I honestly couldn't find any information on (I may not have looked very hard). However, I was able to find this article from Cisco's website about their vision of the future of sports venues and the profit that they feel will come with it. The press conference will also reveal a new Cisco product offering for stadium and venue operators, Cisco said.

I have no idea if the new Yankee Stadium will have any of this technology that Cisco has written about in this article, but I am sure some of it will be there when the doors open next year.

I have to say, some of it is pretty scary stuff. But hey who am I kidding, I'll sacrifice some consumer habit information for a World Series or two...wouldn't you!?!

On to the creepiness...
Imagine a scenario in which a stadium network can share voice, data, and video capabilities across all business functions. Now, imagine an intelligent network that becomes “smarter” as it learns and adapts to a fan’s personal preferences by displaying favorite menu choices, controlling the luxury suite climate, reserving parking locations, offering tickets to upcoming events of interest, or displaying statistics about a favorite player.

With the growing market penetrations of Near Field Communication technology (a short-range wireless technology), radio-frequency identification (RFID), and the proliferation of personal devices such as cell phones and personal digital assistants (PDAs) -- the possibility of deploying digital signs that “recognize” individual fans and display personal advertising or promotional content is both real and potentially very lucrative.

Today’s dull, concrete concourses -- with their stale, static advertising, forgettable directional cues, and single-channel closed-circuit TVs - can instead evolve into personalized shopping malls, interactive information hubs with rotating advertising content, and dynamic video-rich extensions of the live action. Not only does advertising and sponsorship space significantly increase, but the ideal of one-to-one marketing becomes attainable, far exceeding what can be done today.

Hmmm...sounds an awful lot like Minority Report to me. Hopefully when all this is finally implemented into a stadium we are all driving those bad ass Lexus'.

A Yankee Charity Auction Worth Checking Out

November 2008
(Pictured above: Austin Jackson Autographed Helmet)

I got an Email this afternoon from a fellow Ohioan named, Tom Kackley. Tom has spent 20 years as a minor league clubhouse manager, the last four of those years working in the Yankees minor league system.

Tom emailed to ask me if I would help put the word out for a (mostly!) Yankees memorabilia auction that he is holding to benefit the Domestic Violence Project in Stark County, Ohio.

Domestic Violence Project, Inc. provides emergency and supportive services, including drug and alcohol treatment, to victims of domestic violence while promoting increased public awareness of domestic violence issues.

Please take a few minutes to check out all the sweet gear that Tom and DVP have up for auction on eBay by clicking here.

Please be assured 100% of the profit from the sale of the items goes to the shelter, and that each item comes with a certificate of authenticity from the Yankees AA affiliate Trenton Thunder.

So please, please, please check it out
!!! This is a good chance to get some rare memorabilia before some of these guys become big names in the majors, and it helps out a great cause! It's a win-win situation for everybody!

Yankee Stadium Inaugural Season Patch

November 2008
This photo came from Greg's blog, Sliding Into Home (if you haven't been there you should check it out).

It appears to be the new patch that the players will wear to commemorate the inaugural season of the new Yankee Stadium.

I like it ten times better than the final season patch. Very classy.

My Favorite Bill Gallo Yankees Portraits

November 2008
Saw this on the New York Daily New's website.  Bill Gallo is a legendary cartoonist from the Daily News.

A few weeks ago, some of his portraits were auctioned off to commemorate the closing of Yankee Stadium.

Here are my two favorites.

American Idle Rerun Scheduled For 2009?

November 2008
Mark Feinsand/New York Daily News (Image also courtesy of NY Daily News):

Pavano, one of the biggest free-agent busts of all-time, could wind up back with the Bombers this winter as the Yankees look to fill three spots in their starting rotation.

General manager Brian Cashman, who inked Pavano to a four-year, $39.95 million contract in December 2004, remains a big fan of the oft-injured righthander, according to a source, making a return to the Bronx a realistic possibility for the 32-year-old.

"Cashman has definitely not closed the door on Pavano at all," the source said.

Cashman himself acknowledged that he is open to any and all options this winter, though he wouldn't specifically address Pavano's situation.

Yank's Ink Sinkerballer Mitre

November 2008

The Yankees dipped into Joe Girardi's managerial past to produce an option for their future pitching staff on Monday, agreeing to a Minor League contract with right-hander Sergio Mitre.

Mitre, who turns 28 in February, is recovering from Tommy John ligament replacement surgery in July and was a member of Girardi's stable in 2006, when both were in Florida Marlins uniforms.

"We've agreed in principle to a Minor League contract," Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said. "He's rehabbing from Tommy John and he's on a Minor League contract, so it doesn't really affect anything on the Major League side. We hope someday it could."

The Major League portion of Mitre's contract is for $1.25 million, and there is a team option for 2010.

Due to the severe surgery on his right elbow, Mitre may not be ready to pitch until midseason, according to his agent, Matt Sosnick. Normal recovery time from Tommy John surgery is 12-18 months.

"About eight teams showed interest," Sosnick said. "The Yankees showed the most interest."

When healthy, Mitre has tremendous upside. He could be a key contributor for New York in the second half, working either out of the rotation or in the bullpen.

"We'll help finish off his rehab, and hopefully have someone that could, once healthy, push his way into the mix at some point," Cashman said. "Once we get him healthy, we'll get a look and a feel what's best for our needs, but first, we've got to get him healthy."

Who Should the Yankees Avoid?

November 2008
So the inevitable Manny whispers have begun, CC is waiting for the contract offer that will set the market and AJ Burnett is preparing his opt out letter. We know the Yankees are interested in these free among others but who should they avoid at all costs? Who is just so completely wrong for NY, the Yankees and the direction of the team? Let's take a look;

Mike Cameron
This is a classic Cashman move. Why take a chance on a young player who costs nothing(Gardner) with upside when you can pay millions for an older version with very little to no upside? This is very similiar to Morgan Ensberg move this year. The Yankees signed Ensberg and Shelly Duncan lost any chance at playing time. Now Cameron is a lot move valuable then Ensberg is but it is the classic Yankee move of needing a brand name when the kid with some upside is clearly the better choice.

Manny Ramirez for more then two years
He is 36 and is nothing more then a DH. Overpay for two years but DO NOT sign this man for any longer.

Andy Pettitte
I love Andy Pettite but he looked absolutely done to end the year. His performance down the stretch really cost the Yankees this year. The time to make sure Andy stayed was after 2003, not 2008. Let him walk.

Mike Mussina for more then a Year
My guess is that he retires but if he doesn't offer him one year but that is all. The man is in territory few successful pitchers venture into to(Age of 40+)

Nomar, Pedro or Derek Lowe
One declining former Red Sox is enough.

Randy Johnson
HA! Even Cashman isn't that stupid....

Oliver Perez

Perez has a ton of upside and has shown the ability to pitch well in the big spot. However, the Yankees need answers not more questions in their rotation. Also, a player who is unstable and inconsistent will just get over exposed and exploited with the Yankees.
